This is very close to me, and having owned and modified a Chimaera before (had to sell to buy my first house) it seems like an interesting and cheap way back into TVR ownership.

Does anybody have any pearls of wisdom or know the story of the car? Should i leave it and look for something different (am also viewing an MG Midget tomorrow as a bit of a project).

The immobiliser problem seems to be the difficult bit but i'm sure it shouldn't be too difficult to remove completely.

From dotting offers back and forth i think he will accept between £1500 and £1800 for it scratchchin

Immobiliser won't be too hard to suss out with a wiring diagram I would have thought - will just require some splicing in the loom under the passenger side of the dash. Some patience and a multimeter should see you right. Failing that, an auto electrician - or call Carl before he goes abroad!

As for the state of the interior... was it kept outside without a roof on!? Looks bloody awful! Obviously a lot of leaks! I think that is where the expense will go, but if you can get it for £1500 you have to be onto a winner.

Question is, is there anything hidden by the fact that it can't be started?

That is the other thing that i would be worried about!

The interior i am quite confident with, I gutted the Chimaera interior and i'm sure with some new seats, carpets and the rest of the leather cleaned / re-coloured (which i have done before on my Jag with good results) it can be turned around and look good. I can also do the touch up paintwork myself at home so i could possibly get a nicely sorted car for £2500 or so smokin

It is quite different to the Midget, but I am torn between the two. The Midget seems a much better base for a project as it is basically all good, bar a small amount of MOT welding. Added to the fact it is less than half the price it is a difficult decision. If the TVR doesn't sell tonight i will have to arrange a viewing for during the week.

That's been on here before the PO and the current owner posted here looking for advice on how to get it running... Have to admit I was tempted to have a punt myself as bypassing the immobiliser shouldn't be that big a deal. But it does seem to be reducing in value with each new advert...and more issues come to light..

that auction was at £2995 to start with and then he reduced it a fair chunk (though not enough imo)

Nowhere near enough... it's a non-runner, so ~£1500 is about right...

Why bother with the hassle when there are plenty of others in working running and mot'd condition within spitting distance of the price he is asking??

totally agree

it made me laugh somewhat when it was priced within £250 of what the car i bought was.

If I was selling it I'd get an auto electrician on the case, get it MOTed, tidy it up a bit and sell it for decent money.

You come on to a TVR forum and suggest that you're thinking of buying a MG Midget... good man! biggrin

Either would be a good project - I'm a former S3 owner who is now rebuilding a Midget with a Toyota 4AGE engine. One day, probably in 2014, it will be on the road.

Went to see the Midget today, and it needed more work than I really wanted to do (well at the price he was asking for it)

Needed a lot of welding, fixing a blowing exhaust, interior work and a new hood. I may price up the work and go back to him with an offer, but to be honest i don't think i would be prepared to pay more than half of what he was asking for it so I can probably guess what the answer would be.

I will call up the TVR guy now and see what he says and will book up a viewing.

Just come back from seeing the above TVR, but am not sure if it will make a viable project for the price unfortunately. The guy selling was a very nice chap, but from the pounds of it will not budge from £1800 frown

From what I saw it needs a full new interior as it really was in a bad state, a new hood, the immobiliser issue sorted, wiring to be looked at as there was a birds nest under the steering wheel of dodgy connections, and there was various fibreglass and paint damage around the car. The chassis was crusty but seemed solid, however I only saw the drivers side as it was close to the garage wall on the left.

On top of this the brakes pedal went straight to the floor and the clutch was seized. One tyre was also flat but all had good tread.

The drivers door was also saggy an wouldn't close.

It would be a real labour of love I think :/

Hmmm, well you can get a beautifully tidy S for £5k, a well sorted one for £4k, a tidy useable one for £3k and a runner in need of some TLC for £2500.

I'd revise my £1500 value down substantially based on your review. Either way, it's one to walk away from...

lots of issues there.
if it were me then it'd have to be really cheap for me to even consider it.

at £1800 its too much money

the fact is there are better options around for not much more £££.
for example there was a blue S2 for sale about 2 - 3 weeks ago - it was a runner with mot etc, but had a whining gearbox - asking price £2200 (iirc)
