Starter Motor?
Discussion
Had the S out on the drive to check out the voltmeter as it had been reading lower than normal when I took the car out the other day, although that seemed to work itself out after a good hoon around
Car started first time as usual and I drove it out onto the drive. Disconected the positive lead from the battery whilst I prodded at the circuits checking earths etc. Couldn't find anything amiss so reconnected the positive lead of the battery and whilst tightening up the nut managed to short it out on the swan neck cap.
Now the starter motor won't turn the engine over. I can hear the solenoid clicking away but the starter doesn't turn at all. Tried tapping it gently and rocking the car back and forth in gear in case it's got jammed but that hasn't helped.
Checked all the fuses and everything is fine. Is it possible I've cooked my starter motor?

Check all the earths if that doesn't work, sometimes when you disturb them after 15 years they may seem good but disturbing them can cause problems.
When jumping it from another car or battery, if it doesn't work try positive to positive on battery and negative direct to engine (earth). If the battery is cream crackered it can act as a big resistance

Well it's all working again, but still not sure what the problem was. I had already given the battery terminals and connectors a good clean yesterday but it didn't seem to make much difference.
Still the same this morning, before I rolled it onto the road to try and jump it with my other car, I was checking the voltage drop across the battery to see if I could identify a problem with it. Anyway after a couple of clicks of the solenoid with the voltmeter across it (no major voltage drop) the thing started turning over again and fired up. No idea.
It's been fine all day wveral short trips and a couple of longer ones but not a hint of a problem.
Strange
