I had a long chat with them about their methods and visited them but haven't actually had the work done. They will replace the whole of the outrigger (back to the central section at each end) without doing a body lift. They cut off the whole of the outrigger where it attaches to the central tubes and weld in a complete new outrigger assembly, aligned with the chassis jigs they have. This way they don't have to lift the body, they don't cut into the fibreglass and they don't end up patching a dodgy tube. They are quoting a fair bit more than others that I am talking to at the moment so that's the reason I've not taken the plunge yet.

Bit of a long way from Kent though, isn't it?

Hi GB
Thanks for that,
Yes you'r right it is a long way from Kent but with transport costs its still better then local prices at the moment,You say you are talking to "others" could you give me some contact details as I have prices for transport to that area so maybe a few extra quoates would not go a miss (never know might get discount for bulk orders smile )

Thanks

Try these guys (web site says they are closed today due to family bereavement)
Big Col used to work for Dulfords and when they folded he set up on his own. I've used him for general TVR repair work and he always gets a good press from the SW TVR community.
He would normally do a partial body lift and replace only what's necessary so could be lower cost than MB if, for example, only the front corners need replacing (as is the case with my S3). He may need to see the car before committing to a price though just to check the extent of the rot. With MB it's more or less fixed price because the whole of the outriggers are replaced.

Hi all, I'm wondering if it is possible to make a proper weld around the outriggers without at least a partial lift. Dulfords did mine with a partial lift.

In true Blue Peter style, i believe it's done something like this...

top half welded from inside then filler section welded into place from below. Guess the whole thing is then drowned in "waxoyl" or similar, can't see how top could be prepped properly and painted?

MB's method cuts off the whole of the outrigger frame back to the point where they join the central tubes. That way, they can weld the new ones back on, well away from any fibreglass - so don't need to lift the body and you get a fresh set of outriggers all round. If you only have a small section to replace then a partial lift is needed to avoid replacing good (?) metal - which in my case looks like being the cheaper alternative.
