Steering Rack boots

Does anyone know the correct QH # for the rubber boots on an S3 steering rack ?

I bought some Chevette QG1003 but they are not the ones

also the small rubber boot for the steering column shaft is missing... any ideas?

Sadly I don't have another S, but am simply refurbishing a serviceable steering rack before it goes on the bay...

any advice appreciated as usual

There wasn't one originally!!

Or most motor factors seem to keep "one size fits all" type, you cut the ends off to suit your particular rack.

As Norman says, no boots originally fitted over the uj's

The only one I want Norm is my old one

The boots are not symetrical. The nearside boot has a smaller inner dia. Than the offside but both outer dia's are the same as they fit the tie rod. The bugger is that the offside one on mine is as new and the nearside one was ok until I split it when cleaning it Grrr...

The other boot I refer to is the small boot ( and yes there is one ) that fits onto the steering rack gearbox and seals the shaft. Its not on the UJ but below it.

Hopefully someone will know where to get these, meanwhile I'll keep looking

never seen anything like that on my S or any other car, the pinion shaft is sealed by a lip seal (oil seal).

Parts book is no help....

OK back home so can add pics to explain what I mean by the small boot:

this is where it fits. you can see the lip on the rack casting - the boot that's there now is off a caliper and I might just add another and "squash" them to provide a rudimentary seal


the two assymetrical gaiters look like this:
Nearside: (as new)

Offside: (the one that needs replacing)

Save you all this trouble, how much do you want "as is"

thats the big unknown... the bay gods might be kind to me or they may remove my shirt. Its scheduled to start tonight and run for 10 days. once its started I would remove it so long as there were no bids, once theres a bid I would let it run...

Heres a not very good photo from my restoration archives which shows the small seal I have been on about...



theres actually TWO in the picture, one in place and covering the lip on the casting - it had a small split, so I fitted the second one in place to cover the split and to just pop in place if the first one gave up the ghost. I know that adding all that extra weight must have effected performance

Kev,

I never managed to find one that would fit the rack where you are looking either and could do with one. Currently I use the finger of some rubber gloves and cable ties - not pretty but works to keep the area clean of dirt.

If you find a source let me know please
