Fuel Gauge Sender Unit?

Does anyone know where I can buy, or what car this unit is from. Right now, to learn how much fuel is in my tank, I have to take a very sharp right turn, otherwise the gauge reads 0. I am assuming its the sender unit. I can see it on the side of the tank just behind the passenger side rear wheel. Also any ideas on how to remove it from a 24 year old tank without damage. Any info from someone who has tackled this job before would be very welcome.

A picture would identify it as it could be held in with a locking ring or bolted to the tank

Hi Tony,

I bought a brand new locking ring type variant from TVR Car Parts before they closed. Turned out I never needed it as my fault was connection/earth related and by the time I figured it out the new part was inbound. If you do infact need a replacement and you have no joy with David Gerald or others then I may be able to help.

I will try a few of the TVR places to see if they have it when I find out which type I have on my tank. I think my problem is not wiring or earth simply because I can get the gauge to work with a sharp turn to my right which sends the petrol in the tank crashing to the left which is where the sender is located on the tank, therefore I have come to the conclusion it must be the sender. However I'll remember what you said that you may have one and thanks for the offer as I may take you up on it if I run into difficulty getting hold of one. I wonder if the sender is used by any other car? Early mini? Leyland cars etc?

Landrover one fits, just bend the wire a bit, its a landy locking ring too don't forget the red hermatite to make a good seal

I bought a new sender unit from TVR Car Parts before they stopped trading. I am sure that their successors could supply.

However I did go through the usual tests before deciding that the sender was faulty. For instance, running an earth from the battery to the tank and then running a live feed directly to make sure that the gauge was Ok. When I removed the sender the 'tracks' were worn.

Please make sure that you don't create any sparks! If you are removing the sender unit please make sure that you drift it with something non-metallic. We want to have more posts from you......

Adrian Venn (Exactly TVR Coventry) makes replacement seal in various thicknesses,IF my memory serves I think I had to use a 5mm seal and red hermatite to get a good seal

If it were to accidentally ignite, it would probably blow me out of my Elvis boots, so I shall take extra care. I don't want to make the Mrs a widower just yet, and leave everything to her. Especially the TVR.

Firstly, I shall do the necessary tests to eliminate earth, and make sure all is well. If all is OK, I shall try and source a new sender, and only then would I attempt the job. The advice coming in from you gentlemen is always helpful, as now, I know what I am up against even before attempting the job. Thanks to all and any other info welcome.

Be a good idea to start soaking it with WD40 or the like just in case it has to come out. They tend to rust quite a bit. I found tapping all three of the tabs on the locking ring in turn worked well as they can shear off quite easily if you focus on one.

Does anyone know if the Landrover defender 90 unit fits, as I have found one and am thinking of buying it. My car is the S2. This is the one on ebay.

yup thats the same as mine you have to use your old one as a pattern to bend the wire though, its still not prticularly accurate and tends to wallow a bit, my original was a lot better but when it broke this was a fairly cheap option, get some red hermatite or simalar mine would not seal without it

Thanks for that info. It certainly looks the same from the exterior with the locking ring and everything. Only, mine has a single wire in the middle which must be the positive but this has two wires, so I assume the other wire must be the earth, where as my one I assume earth's through the tank. I think I will order one before I take it apart so as I can instantly fit the new one. I am not too worried about its accuracy as TVR fuel gauges are never that accurate anyway. As long as there is some indication that there is sufficient fuel in the tank. Thanks again.
