Halfshafts lengths?
Discussion
My CV joints feel a bit worn, but I can't find replacement joint kits in the US. There are some halfshafts for the Merkur XR4Ti and Scorpio, which are the same for both cars. The question is, are the S series shafts the same length as the standard Sierra/Granada? That would be 20.5" and 18.75" compressed length.

David

Surely you only change the joints, not the complete shaft
I think his problem is that he can't buy the joints only, in the US.
I am sure I read that although the Sierra has a long shaft and a short one, the TVR uses two short ones, because the diff is central. The answer may be to buy shafts with the correct joints on, and then maybe swap the joints onto the shafts he has.
Hi David,
I recently renewed my RH side CV joints, purchased from J&R in Birmingham for £41.32 for the pair incl p&p. which I thought was very reasonable.
www.jandrcvjoints.co.uk
I don't know if they'll send to the US, but worth asking.
Each kit ( JR27 ) contains a brand new CV joint ( no. FO-574 1211 ), rubber boot, retaining clamp, circlip & grease sachet and seem good quality, they also carry a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty.
I measured the length of my shaft ( ooh-err missus ) to be 450mm overall, and 440mm between CV joint circlip grooves.
The Ford CV part no. is 72GG - 4635 - BA and is the 100mm dia 25-spline LOBRO type 32 mm thickness as fitted to the XR4 X4, and possibly Sapphire & Scorpio.
HTH.
Edit: Before you start removing driveshafts, make sure that the Torx bolts haven't started working loose, it can happen, giving symptoms like a worn CV.
PS. I've just checked on the J&R website, it seems I may have been lucky & got a special offer. The kit is currently priced at £22.99 ( or £18.99 for the same part, no.27 ! ) each plus vat & p/p. Still very reasonable though.

Thanks guys for the very useful info. I think I have formulated my game-plan now:
Purchase a pair of shafts that I think are correct, but if the length turns out to be wrong, just swap the joints. Not much of a risk, the shafts are less than $60 each, which would be close to the cost of the joints from Ol' Blighty. If the shafts happen to be correct, I avoid a grease-covered day in the garage. If not, oh well!
Length-wise, the Super7heaven site has the shorter Sierra shaft as 47.4cm, very close to the 18.75" Merkur XR4Ti shaft. 25T splines, 100mm flange. I think these are the ones for me. The only concern I have is Glen's measurement of 450 OAL is a bit short. I need to check the VL joint cross-section drawing to see if the outer race overhangs the shaft or not. Ten years ago I could just walk out into the shopfloor at GKN and find everything that I needed, but I no longer work there.
I'm sure it's the shaft - I got under the car yesterday evening and the passenger side outer joint sounded dry and had too much play for my liking. I think this explains a thrumming noise when driving, especially when cornering hard to the right with a passenger.
Cheers,
David

Yes David, my measurement was just for the shaft itself, the CV joints when installed can overlap the ends of the shaft by a fair margin.
My old CV's had a considerable amount of "backlash" and were making those tell-tale sounds on lift-off and low speed tight corners.
The new joints have no play at all and are lovely and quiet. Not like the exhaust

Well, just my luck, the Ford shafts are over 1" longer than the originals, so I set about swapping joints. Unfortunately the splines are different so that won't work either. I suppose it's good that I can see that the old joints are badly worn, but I can't fix it properly today. I can't bear not having the car running, so I will have to just clean and repackage for now.
I tried to purchase the joints from J&R, but they won't ship to the States. I'll have to use my sister as a conduit and pay shipping twice. Boo.

David, didn't you count the splines before purchasing the shafts?
I did say 25 splines, there are quite a few different types out there.
I tried to find out more about the shafts before I ordered them, but couldn't confirm so I took a gamble and lost. Almost back together - just checking the torque setting....I did say 25 splines, there are quite a few different types out there.
