TVR S V8 starter motor help

Hi I think I need to replace my starter motor on an s v8 as I was driving today and stopped to get a paper. When I went to re start no turning over. Tried again 30 mins later and perfect ??? Garage suggested I replace does that sound right ?

Which model do I need as I have read I need the small bit high torque as limited space to fit. Also do I need to move exhaust manifold and any other advice gratefully received ?

Check the earth and connections first before you spend your money.

Exhaust manifold shouldn't be needed to remove the starter motor. You should be able to get at it from underneath to remove the wiring connections. Then the two securing bolts can be accessed with a very long wobble bar from the front. Then it should lift clear.

But as others have said, clean up the connections first and see if that helps as replacement starters are nowhere near as cheap as a hour of your own time on your drive. Also it may be worthwhile seeing how much of a voltage drop there is along the wire that runs directly from the battery. They were never very good originally and will have corroded since creating a drop on voltage getting to the starter motor.

If you need it I would go for the highest output one possible that's still compact enough to fit. Rimmer Bros should have what you need along with numerous other specialists for the RV8 such as real steel.

Thank you so much I will try what you have suggested. I have tried the car a couple more times today and is perfect. It's time out this year when it failed so may have had moisture.

Sounds a bit like the old "hot start issue", regularly comes up on Chimaera forum.

Tired starter motors don't help, neither does all the heat around the starter and, more importantly, its solenoid that sits on top (just under the exhaust), other main issue is the devious route the power has to take to operate the solenoid, any resistance and solenoid doesn't get the 12 volts it so likes!

Trick is to fit a relay with a good supply from the big main feed to the starter then other side of relay back to solenoid operating connection. Use the existing solenoiod wiring to operate the relay coil.

Make sure you check earth from under alternator to chassis and battery earth to chassis under rear arch drivers side.
