It's refered to as "wrinkle finish", popular on after market alloy rocker covers back in "my day". It can be done with aerosols, I did an MGB dashboard many years ago (it was the standard finish on early cars) and it came out ok but more recently tried doing some steel rocker covers and it didn't wrinkle!

I had these alloy covers profesionally powder coated by these guys, very helpful and friendly service and with the blasting to clean prior to coating cost only a little more than buying a couple of aerosols.

These are alloy covers ( possibly from a Sierra XR4i ?), there may be other designs ?

Hi Mike , they look superb , i have a pair of these covers myself that i want to fit eventually , did you have to mod the alternator bracket to fit them ?

I had already "tweeked" the alternator bracket because even with the old tin covers it was very close.

Looks good Mike, Have just done my dash in the same finish, after brushed steel, wood veneer that I scratched realy happy with it, apart from not noticing that the bottom heater plastic light cover fell off somewhere in the process.

Yes Mike, that does indeed look good. I wonder how well it would work on steel covers? Provided they were lightly blast cleaned or bead blasted first it should work shouldnt it? Not sure about heat resistence and whether you can still get crackle in a range of colors as you could once.
Now that I have chrome covers I fancy crackle red to match the engine!!! The chrome however is easily 'wipe clean' and is there purely for labour saving purposes...honest!

Company I used have a huge range of colours and finishes, I only looked at blacks but quite possibly have a wrinkly red?

I already have a wrinkly red. Age is not without its problems but there is no need to go telling everyone!!
