speedo drive oil seal

Hi guys, finally going to put the oil back in the gearbox and replace the Speedo drive this weekend, but, I have a nagging feeling I should replace the little oil seal too but I have no idea how to get it out or back in or if its even possible externally, s1 of course

Hi Mikel,
Apparently nobody knows!
I presume you just need to prise it out with a pick or sharp hooked probe or similar, but I imagine access is pretty awkward.
I've not done the job myself, I'm assuming the seal sits in an annular groove in the casing and is compressed by the speedo cable flange.
Or it fits on the flange itself?
You'll sort it I'm sure.

It's all back together now and sure enough there is a drip, just have to decide if I can live with it start again or I may be able to seal it with the Speedo drive, and some gasget but will oil travel up the cable and end up on my lap ?

The drip may well be the oil that has leaked into the speedo cable itself. Give it a couple of days, if it is still leaking then you will need to change the seal.

Yes, just like an "Archimedes Screw" !


but it will come back down every time you reverse

I thought it was the cable flange that makes the seal?

No, there is a tiny seal around the Speedo drive pinion, I could get the Speedo flange to seal but pretty sure oil will travel up the cable, a drop or two is lubrication much more is a mess. Meditate on this I will.
