Broken driving lamps.

I found a kin great stone inside one of my driving lamps yesterday

The other lamp has a crack in it, so I guess that I need a new set. I know back in August it was mentioned Lucas had them on backorder for 3 months. Does anyone know if the order arrived. I suppose I should dig out the lucas number on the net and give them a ring.

Also, my near side headlamp reflector is rusting away. Is this the part that is referred to as headlamp shell in the parts list. I may as well get the whole lot fixed in one go.

My only other alternative was to remove the lamps all together and turn them into brake ducting holes. I think Joospeed has done some thing like this.

Comments appreciated.

Both mine are rusting quite badly, but still work. The ring spot lamps fit perfectly and are around £20 a pair. They fit in upside down IIRC.

If your headlamps need replacing, get the mini crystal halogen jobbies… I had those fitted with Philips Blue Vision bulbs and it made a HUGE difference… see my profile for details...

I would second the crystal Halogen jobbies, got them on mine, some people don't like the clear look though.

The headlamp shell is the niche the headlamp fits into.

If you're after a pair of headlamps at a reasonable price the Wipac QuadOptic set is good value (about £35 a pair IIRC). You can uprate the bulbs in these too as they are glass units and won't start to melt.

Ring Sportz Blue are excellent bulbs, 80/110w and give a really cold white light just like HID headlights. You'll need two new relays to drive them as the S wiring is a bit wimpy and you won't notice the difference so much, also you may start to cook your loom!

For standard high output bulbs, I'd recommend Philips Vision Plus 50% extra brightness bulbs. Same wattage as standard bulbs but much brighter so no wiring mods required.

Try:- www.powerbulbs.co.uk for bulbs, and.... www.s-v-c.co.uk for the headlights.

Podie bought his crystal clear headlights from a mini parts supplier but I can't remember where. Podie can you post details pls?

Cheers.

I had a driving lamp replaced by Castle before I picked up the car. It only took them about a week to get one in. If you can't get them elsewhere they may be able to point you in the right direction.

They've changed their website, so you'll have to go hunting for them...!

Maybe I am being dim, but I can't seem to find any suppliers of ring spot lamps. Is ring the supplier, or just the type

£20 sounds very good.

That sounds great Podie, from your profile it appears the lights are a straight swop. Were they at all difficult to fit.

Many thanks,

Cheers Podie, that's the type, £39.99 a pair.

Yep they're still going, as mentioned above the Ring Sporz Blue bulbs are excellent.

Ring are the manufactuers. They are readily available from the majority of places, A1 Motorsport, place where you can buy stick on bits, try Halfrauds.

How easy is it to replace these? I take it I'll have to remove my innerwing guards?

Also how difficult is it to replace the relays?

Crystal Halogens are naybe not as good as the Wipac Quadoptic, I have used the Wipac ones on my mini, they seem very good and I've never had a problem. The crystal Halogens just update the look of the car a bit more, what with having clear lenses.

Std. Glass

Crystal Halogens + a good example of rusty driving lights and broken indicators.

Now I feel really thick. I knew I should have never asked about headlamps and driving lamps in the same thread

I have found the ultra delux mega headlamps on the website Podie posted.

As far as I understand it the Ring spot lamps can be found on the same site. ff to have a quick look:

Hi Chris,

The new relays should only be required if you uprate to higher wattage bulbs. These are in addition and are wired for supply to a good live feed or even direct to the battery (fused of course). This will give you the best possible voltage at each bulb.

Your existing wiring and relay will just be used for switching the new relays.

I think I shall wait until I can get together with someone more knowledgeable in the art of wiring to do it as electrics is my big downfall!! I hate them.

Z - yep those are the ones.

Also bear in mind the Crystal Jobbies are plastic lenses and may melt if you fit higher wattage bulbs. Also, apparently LED sidelight are also not legal. Neither are the crystal headlights, but I passed the MOT with them.
