Hello.
The garage is now looking like a trade counter with all the parts I'm accumulating!
The next on the list are bottom ball joints.
I know QSJ765S are the ones to get but these are no longer available and I'm a little concerned about alternatives as I've read that some will not give enough movement.
I was thinking of DELPHI TC76 as an alternative but wondered if anyone had recently fitted any and if they had experienced any problems?
Of course I could buy TVR parts but they are SO much dearer!
Regards Chris.

Just spotted these as well.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&am...

Not sure if these are the "low quality" items with insufficient movement though...

If you dont get them from Amazon give me an email and I will contact my motor factor friend, he has been very good at getting old stock items for us before.

Hi Chris,
As far as I'm aware, the clearance issues occur with the top balljoint, I just replaced mine & had to grind the body of the new item as well as chamfer the upper wishbone housing slot to allow the bolt holes to line up and get enough range for camber adjustment.

I think the bottom balljoint fitment is straightforward enough.

Lockheed/ Delphi TC 76
Armstrong 5214 1.510
First Line TC 76
are all alternatives for QH QSJ 765S

Try fleabay or your local motor factors.

Does anyone have the top balljoint part numbers? I'm also looking for information on part numbers for replacing the bushes, a job for the winter months. I've tried the Search facility but it's a bit haphazard.

Cheers,

That seems to be a can of worms question - parts lists suggests QSJ1004S but also gives this link http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Glen has just done his - see ^

One of the first jobs I did on my car way back in 2009 was front suspension overhaul, used "Firstline" top and bottom joints, cars had a bit of use since then and nothings broke yet !

tell a lie, one did bend a bit (but didn't break) when I did this wink..........

Top = FBJ5138

Bottom = FBJ5068

Gosh!
I hope the overall damage wasn't too bad, I can see why the joint bent a little.
Thanks for the info, I will order a pair now, seems all of the makes would be ok. I read that some joints did not allow enough movement in the bottom wishbone and were put under strain which caused the problem.
Sometimes I think you can read too much on the internet and get confused by it all, or am I just too old for this technology?
Regards Chris.

Top balljoint ...old one with box for new FAI item showing part no SS159
The replacement balljoint would not properly fit all the way into the wishbone housing due to the casting around the ball fouling the wishbone end.

So I ground away the problem areas with a tungsten grinder bit until I could obtain full range of camber adjustment. The casting is very thick in this area, so it won't affect the strength of the balljoint.

To save all this palaver, the correct part ( if you can find them ) is old stock QH QSJ1004S which has a pronounced waisted bit in the middle.

Hi Steve,
The top balljoint numbers are mentioned here on this thread, but have a look at the links for further info.

If you're replacing your suspension bushes, I would recommend upgrading to poyurethane ones, they're not cheap but well worth it for the improvement in handling. I replaced the anti-roll bar bushes as well, there are 3 different diameters so you need to measure yours to order the correct ones.
I chose Supaflex, not as expensive as Powerflex. Just Google or run a search on fleabay for suppliers.
Part no's were:
SPF 1720 ( 4 off ) front upper wishbone
SPF 0808 ( 4 off ) lower wishbone
SPF 0765/22K ( 1 pr ) for 22mm a/roll bar.
They include the bushes, tubes & ptfe grease sachets.

What happened there Mike? Was that sheared shocker the cause or the result?

I tend to park in places that are nice & soft & kinder to my underparts biggrin

My little "Belgium Bump" back in 2011, the broken shock was part of the result.....the white van was the cause !

Ouch - not nice! But glad it's well repaired.

Update on ball joints - following the discussion above I tried to order a pair from the Amazon link above (for stock!). The order went through and I even got an order dispatched notification.

Then I got the email I expected saying they were out of stock (not what the website said!).

Anyway - they can supply the Firstline ones that Phillpot mentioned so I'm waiting for them to arrive.

Just an update on the Quinton Hazel bottom ball joints.
There were some on ebay advertised as QH so I sent them a message asking if they were genuine QH parts.
No longer available was the reply!
So it looks like |First line or Delphi are the options. I think the Lemforder parts are now obsolete too.
Regards Chris.

Chris - thanks for that.

A bit of googling suggest the Lemfoerder part may be available - but not as inexpensive as the alternatives.

Just because it appears on the website doesn't mean it's available!

It may be worth contacting SQS Autofactors in Brightlingsea, Essex.
They recently had stock of both the QH balljoints, more importantly old stock of the upper ones which would fit straight on with no probs.
They advertise on fleabay sometimes, so try a search on there.
