Set off a car alarm this afternoon - I swear my sports pipes are getting louder with every passing week

Mega grinning etc. Other than Podie's X's, anyone else particularly good/ equally-enthusiastic about setting off car alarms?

No, I'm sure Podie's is the only one that can do it

I can do it

In podie's 'online lesson' he was saying the pops/bangs helped set off alarms, I still cant pop on command, seems most of the alarms I set off are by chance without pops

Still, at 127 db, his car mustave been one helluva howler!

I have only ever set one car alarn off with my Tiv,

However the Chav over the road manages it every morning at 6:30 with his "bake bean tin" exhausted corsa

Mine always had a good gruff reumble to it, often mistaken as a V8, I guess it must have had a sports exhaust as compared to some it did have an edge to the sound and would do baby pop-n-bangs if pushed.

Not nice to hear it when going away from you in the arms of a new man

I have managed more than my fair share, especially since the new exhaust has been fitted. Sitll not the same amount as my mini though. Then again I don't frequent car parks with the S or fear of not getting out again.

I dont frequent then either (mainly in fear of not being able to find myself a free double space ) its a shame the multistories arn't free though, Im sure most of us could use a good 5 minute hoon around an echo chamber full of alarmed cars every morning

Was introduced to some new people at last nights fireworks party - "Everyone, this is Rob"

"We know who he is, we heard him coming a mile away"

Hey Rob, there's no way I'd take the Tiv around your local Arndale car park, that exit used to make me cringe!

To those who haven't been there, it's a single car width with spriral ramp from the top to the bottom with 18" high concrete kerbs each side and these kerbs always used to have lots of differnt coloured paint on them...

All car parks are a source of much fear for me. Especially since I used to run on S02's which were a lower profile. I also have a list of service stations not to go to due to speed bumps.

I was trying to be ironic.

Mine is pretty loud, although I've never measured it an a "mine is bigger than yours" kind of way. Most of the owners I have spoken to have had the "car alarm" experience so don't get toooo excited!

I was at a rolling road session the other week, with Cerbs, Chims, couple of griffs etc, and the T350s were definitely the noisiest. After that, there wasn't a lot of difference, not to my ears anyway, and the one S that was on that day (not mine) sounded as loud as anything else.

Kingston has one like that, with the width so small you can't see the kerbs as they are too close you your car

I'm sure its another anti-car policy to force us to own sensible superminis

Hey Will. Were you at the grasshopper surrey meet a few weeks back. Might be wrong, thought I saw your name on PH in the thread...

Where abouts are you based? Did you live around Eastbourne? Id love to floor it in there, but always fear some kid will run out from behind one of the hundreds of cars, so keep revs down - not set anything off in there... yet

I wonder if my 16 inch rear wheels help raise my arse up off the ground, only grounded out a few times so far, but then again the V8's arn't nearly as bad in that dept as the 6's, I gather.

Right, so that I dont have to start my 10th thread on exhausts and car alarms can I ask Austec to remove the wadding from my back box next time Im there? I mean... if I do, will the car be slightly louder (without the adverse effects of removing the baffles?)

I understand they burn away over time... would be willing to spend +-1 hours labour to get that done, if it would make the car a little louder instantly, and increase popping and banging.

Hi Rob

I think Will has moved on and bought himself a Fiat 127 or something
Anyway, yes I used to live in Sussex and regularly visited Eastbourne but that was long before I had the S. I don't think I'd like to visit that Arnedale car park in the S (unless it's changed)

Didn't Austec supply and fit your exhaust only, not make it? They would have to remove it to open up the silencer box and not all garages have the capability of welding stainless steel. Best give them a call and ask

To be honest, as an ex hydraulics engineer, your manifold feeding into a downpipe is less than equal to the area and volume of the exhaust ports on your head and the manifold, thus it creates backpressure here that is more than sufficient so removing baffles should not have an adverse effect on performance. On the S with the set up of the manifolds and the down pipes etc, the baffles are purely to assist silencing. If you found it too noisy or the MOT inspector does you can just fit some insets used for track days and then remove them again after the MOT.

I don't use my S enough for increased exhaust noise to be an annoyance but if I used it to commute each day then I'd probably leave the exhaust as standard.

Someone will have to explain backpressure at the next meet (sorry for sounding dense) - Im not sure what the ports and heads are.

I know setting off car alarms is childish, if podie could manage 7 in one morning (if I could do it on command with the pops) then there might be an element of fun at play. I really love the pops and bangs, they make me laugh and therefore I could do without the wadding which Im sure wont have any adverse effects. I think Austec can do it - they said they could remove the baffles, but assured me I would be happy with the baffles left in tact, which I am, I guess. Having a stereo is reason enough to leave the car as it is.

The Arndale car park isnt that bad. Steep ramp to get in (not a problem at all) - the winding out-spiral takes time to get down, its not a problm, just takes time and a little concentration Do you ever pop down to EB these days?

I have to say that the extra noise that my car makes is fabulous, but it does have a down side. You get noticed everywhere you go, especially by the Bib, is also gets very droning on long motorway journeys. Especially at night. Resonance can be a problem as well.

Also as Kentish has said you can encounter problems with the MOT man. Friends of mine, when I did minis have been failed for having too loud an exhaust, and the tester refused to pass them until a new exhaust was fitted, not just a bolt on silencer. The Bib can also pull you up for excess noise as I belive there is a legal limit.

Excessive noise also can make it harder to hear if you have problems.

Car Alarms wise, it all depends on what type of car alarm is fitted, how it's sensors works and how it's set up. I used to have a cheap one in my mini that would go off every time someone went near it, the one on the Tiv has a microwave sensor which is impervious to noise.

Pods, may just have neighbours with badly set up alarms. Best place to set them off is multistory car parks as you get a lot of echos. But then in both of my cars I have been toldd off by parking supervisors for making too much noise and threatened with bans.

I was there about 2 years ago, so I guess that doesn't constitute a frequent visitor

However, I do like EB, I may even retire there oneday

I was at a junction a few weeks back, it was dark, me on one side and some other car on the other. He wasnt indicating so with the way clear ahead, I decided to give it max welly, and rocketed across at lightspeed making enough noise to wake the dead, right past - oh dear, that looks like a cop car

Did I slow down, hell... I only live around the corner, and was parked safely on the driveway before he could say donut

Careful what you wish for, or you'll be dodging the coffin dodgers one day
