That's the problem it is just a high wattage resistor if there is still a bit of terminal left you may be able to read how many ohms it is with a multimeter, someone may be able to let you have a resistor if they have had a faulty motor.

The wire wound resister is prone to failure and is probably easy to replace if you can find the value. Another option is to fit a pulse width modulater speed control, this would give you fully variable fan speed control. A decent quality one is about £12 on eBay. Was going to fit one myself but not got round to it yet.
