S-series Fastback.
Discussion
Has anyone ever had an S-series Fastback? If the S is seen as a revision of the late 70s 3000S then surely someone has thought of transforming one into a closed coupe version. I've searched in vain for a picture of such a car so does that mean it hasn't been done? If not then what do you think a tasteful conversion would do for the value of an S-series? I mentioned in a previous post that I was thinking of making a hardtop from scratch for my S1 but then I thought some more....
I suppose something like the Ashley fastback conversion for the Spitfire or Sprite could be done (basically a bolt-on), but a properly blended in full conversion would look better although that would be irreversible. Any information or opinions would be welcome.

A roof? A ROOF?????
A PERMANENT ROOF?????
Are you out of your mind ?

I won't be able to sleep tonight.
The horror! :shudder:
Edit: Sorry OP, no offense, but you did catch me off guard there!
There are plenty of permanent hard-top TVR's to choose from, if that's what floats yer boat: Tasmin, T350t, Cerbera, Chimaera
( see what I did there guys? ) etc.If you choose any of these it should fulfil your criteria, but please don't nail a lid on an S.
It just wouldn't be right.

Unless you want to streamline it for racing at Le Mans ........

Lols... You guys...
Anyhoo I don't think an s has been done but I think there is a racing chim with this done iirc someone was going to produce a kit.. Can't remember if it could be removed a la hardtop but any way it would need a duck tail like the old cobra fastback racers..
Sounds like fun.

Ruin it.I can understand the logic in having a removable hard top to replace the folding roof but not this. In (very) simple terms the cerbera is a hard topped chimaera but that works well because of the shape of the cars and the fact the styling/design was done by the skilled team at the factory. I cannot believe a conversion to an S series would ever look right.
As with anything it's up to each person what they do with their car but you did ask

Can't see why anyone would ever want to do such a thing, from an appearence view it wouldn't work (unless very well done indeed). It works well for things such as an MX5 but not for an S. I'm not being over protective of it, but the spirit is about open top motoring. There's nothing wrong with the fastback idea though of course, the M and Taimar would fit that bill very nicely and are also great cars

...that's a Capri isn't it?
To be nice about it, S's appeal tends to be as it is proper open topped motoring in a TVR...
...conversely i wonder how difficult it would be to loose the roof completely and just have a tonneaux cover to cover it when it is parked in the rain....how about that Glen..

If you make a "hard top" there will always be someone who wants to chop it into a convertible and likewise someone will want to make a convertible into a GT
Rarely (imho) do they look "right" (Ashley Sprite and Alpine Harrington being exceptions, quite like them
)

A few years back a company called Crayford cut the top off all sorts of cars......

Ironic they should photo it by a river, it looks like a boat !

Hi Andy,
Attractive as a tonneau cover seems, I feel it would be impractical for Austin, who lives outside. I think a tonneau would just collapse under the weight of rainwater pools ( or snowdrifts ) from the deluges we get up here on a regular basis. You'd need a ridge pole or something. And bilge pumps. ( nearly put bulge pimps! )
The roof does form a useful run-off shape when the Leven Top Cover is put over it & keeps the interior nice & dry. Also a dehumidifier helps as well.
I used to have a tonneau on my old TR2 years ago, but rarely used it, it was too much faffing about with all those lift the dot fasteners.
But if you fancy it, it's not too difficult a job for a good trimmer.
Go for it

Alan you did I believe the cosworth s with jenvy tbs has it.
I hope the owner has it, but it looks like he was having trouble retrieving it from the previous owner:http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
I would like to see how it looks on a car, although I can't see me ever wanting one.
Yes Phillpot, that is exactly what I had in mind; the 3000M or Taimar. I suppose that being an old codger I just got used to TVRs having fixed roofs and thought it might be nice to make an 'S' even more retro than it already is. What really appeals to me about the 'S' is that it is an evolution of the 60s and 70s TVRs. I don't think I'd want to do a permanent conversion if it would make the car unsaleable or reduce its value. I'm amazed that it's never been done though. I have to confess I'm not really a purist. I think it's good that totally original examples of any car should be preserved, but otherwise I'm not sure I think it matters. Mind you, I'm not sure I approve of Morris Minors with 1.3 a-plus engines, 5-speed gearboxes, disc brake conversions and modern fabric-upholstered seats with headrests; the character of the original is lost. Better a hotrod with a big V8 or leave it alone! Contradictory eh?
