Interior door handle

Has anyone had any trouble with their interior door handle? My drivers side one is very stiff, does not open the door until pulled right out, and then doesn't spring back. The outside door handle opens the door no problem.
I have had the door skin off, but it's almost impossible to see the problem. My thought is an old cable to the lock...any other ideas to free it up?

My interior door handle used to stick out a bit. I took the door skin off and adjusted the linking wire (bent it) and its been fine ever since. If you remove the linking wire does the handle spring back ok?

My passenger sides sticks out a little but not badly, I'll have to sort it out sometime.

If you need any spares, the handle is from Audi 80, 90 or 100 models from the late 1980's to mid 90's. In fact I think my '99 Passat may even have the same handles!
