Anyone else commute through heavy traffic in the rain regularly?

Just drove in to work (West London - so a 9 mile drive takes about 50 mins )

When I was queueing in traffic for any duration there would seem to be a fair bit of 'steam' coming off and around the bonnet -

Now the temp was normal and the fan was cutting in every few mins as normal - but there seemed to be quite a bit - certainly more so than Ive noticed before...

I dont have any insulation under the bonnet so am suspecting that it gets hotter than is would under normal circumstances... is this likely to be a problem?

cheers all,

Tim

Hmm… I'd check all the hoses and the caps on the coolig system to be on the safe side… but could it be a case of rainwater steaming off the hot car…?

Could just be cold morning plus rain, then the car wouldn't have to be particularly hot for you to see steam coming off the bonnet when standing still.

I've seen it, at some stage or other, with most of the cars I've had. Problem is, once you notice it, you start looking for it, then you start worrying about it, then before you can stop yourself the car's in bits while you try to fix the fault... I know!

This post is intended to make you feel better, but don't blame me if you ignore it and then the engine explodes ok?

I don't have any insulation either (yet) and mine does this too. It doesn't appear that you have any other problems if the guage and fan are acting in a "normal" manner.

I think it's just that the bare GRP bonnet conducts the heat fairly well.

Steam off the surface of the bonnet is quite common in damp weather. Steam coming out of openings in the bonnet is a little more alarming and may imply a cooling system leak (although it may just be the engine bay drying out if it is still warming up).

Sometimes in marginally foggy weather it seems to have its own little weather system over the bonnet, with small areas of mist forming in the low pressure areas. Fascinating to watch.

Oh, and the other one that worried me once turned out to be the exhaust from the car in front….

Thought that was the case once, turned out theat when I revved the car more steam came out

Turned out that the rubber seal on the pressure cap was gone as well as the pipe from expansion tank to swirl pot blocked.

I use the car everyday, in the North East. Never get any steam from under the bonnet. If I do it's a sign that the water system is leaking. Leave the car running then open the bonnet and check for water. Rev the car from under the bonnet and see if it steams. Check your water level.
