Has anyone mounted their spare wheel in the engine bay?

Mounted mine in the garage but its still in the way!
Can't remember the last time I used a spare wheel on the road certainly not in the last 20 years. I check the tyres regularly; carry a can of tyre seal (never used) and a pump, used very occasionally.
I don't think I'd like to drive on the space saver anyway.

It has been a long time but I remember seeing an article in Sprint (before the days of the web forums) where someone had mounted the spare under the bonnet. I cannot remember if it was a 3000S or S2 but I do remember than you need to re-mount the swirl pot further over to give space and manufacture a small stub pillar that holds the wheel at approx 30deg which matches the angle of the bonnet.
Thought about it myself a while ago but went with the tyre weld and pump option for the last 17yrs but been fortunate never to have had a puncture - do still put the space saver in for the long journeys. My concern would be the heat build up under the bonnet and what it would do to the tyre? If I can face doing battle with the loft I'll see if I can find the article.

V8S ( Battery is in the boot already ), swirlpot moved back, radiator pipework altered to create enough space. New fabricated carrier mounted where the swirlpot used to be.
SH does warn that the restriction in radiator cooling air flow could cause overheating problems.
Rob, from personal experience, I was so glad I had my spare, or I would have missed the Spa trip in 2012. No aerosol punture repair spray can could have mended a burst in the sidewall & a buckled wheel.
I ALWAYS carry my space saver in the boot.
I think Maffe was glad he had his spare when his Schrader valve stem failed up an Alp un Switzerland last year. It's the difference between getting you out of trouble & continuing the trip or spending hours waiting for recovery.

totally agree with carrying a space saver (somwewhere), may not be much fun to drive on but does give another option if aerosol thing doesn't work and you don't fancy waiting around for a recovery truck
Same info in the second edition.
Admittedly, it's low down on my list of 'to do's'. I too carry a can of tyre spunk - and need to source a couple of 12v inflators (one for each of the sisters) - but like the security of knowing there's a back-up.

I would have thought behind the seats would be a good place, and maybe just enough room for the original road wheel after the change has had to be done. Unlike under the bonnet !!
I suppose this saves no room though, cos you will have some of the luggage in the space behind the seats already.
Or.... how about on the passengers lap .. like a sort of "AirBag" the only "S' with that safety feature.. !

I went for a run in the S on Sunday, put the targa panels in the boot ( showers were forcast ) and I laid the spacesaver between and behind the seats. I would imagine you would have to stand a full size wheel up behind the seats. But why? There's plenty of room for both targa panels on the right, and the spacesaver on the left of the boot. Probably be able to fit a full size spare in there if you prefer, admittedly at the expense of some luggage room.
