Chassis colours?

I'm in the process of stripping down my S1 for a full chassis overhaul. It's going to be a lengthy one as I've recently found out it's been botched in the past (have receipts in the history, so know who and when etc).

I'm planning to go white chassis (seems to be white under all the gunk) with black wishbones/trailing arms as per the S brochures I have.

But we also have an S2 chassis in the workshop, which seemed to be gloss black, as with a couple of wedges we've had in. And then I have a V8S, which has been painted with Hammerite all over (and, funnily enough, needs doing again) but looking at the pedal box inside it seems that the coated parts might have originally been a terracotta red.

So, what model have you got and what colour was the chassis originally?!

Mines an S2 from 1990, it has a grey chassis except where it has a light oil coating !

BTW - anyone remind me of the paint colour - need to do some touch up!

My very early S1 chassis is white underneath all the Waxoyl / Dinitrol with black suspension parts.
I believe Barry's S1 chassis was also white ( he's spent a lot of time repainting it white, looks very nice now ).

The terracotta red on the V8S you refer to may possibly be the old "red lead" or red oxide primer that was commonly used as a rustproofing undercoat.
I don't know if that would be factory applied though.

Bright red seems to be the preferred colour for the later S models.

We went with Red RAL3002. A bit brighter than the original slightly duller Red.

It was Ford Radiant Red for me but silver looks good with dark body colours.

i think white gives a very clean look but you need to keep it clean so not to practicable

When I was cleaning mine it appeared to have been black from new over some rather pale 'red lead' undercoat. It now had black chassis with red suspension arms.

Looking good there...and another 24v cossy conversion in the making

I've tried a couple of colours

due to what tin of paint I had to hand

New out riggers (and plates for the roll cage. Blasted and then coated white, then bitumen ( a BIG mistake )then yellow



now Blue

I've owned an 89 S 1.5, an 89 350i, and currently have an 89 S2. All have had black chassis, however, I think that a lighter colour like white or light grey would be a good idea (lets you see any corrosion early). Also, not a fan of powder coating.

Cheers guys. So it looks like it's mainly the white on the S1, then black on the S2, then darker red on the S3/S4/V8S from the factory then?

Mine is a 1989 S2 and under the black Waxoyl stuff is the original red.

An '89 with a RED chassis?!

Right.....maybe options were available from the factory, just like the bodywork!

As you can see from my mock up using pastic pipe to work out the correct cut of steel tube before I replaced the rotten tube plus the out-rigger you can see the original red paint.
