S2 Servo replacement
Discussion
I have fitted a Ford Ka (with ABS) servo and master cylinder (same bore as the original) - needed the shaft extending a small amount to align with the peddal assembly. This is the set up used by much later Tivs, I have fitted bigger discs and calipers too.
These Ford Ka assemblies are also now obsolete!
There is much discussion as to what servo and master cylinder to use - some say that it must match the original in every way but then others 'up-grade' the discs and calipers without a thought to the servo or master cylinder. Be sure to tell your insurer what you fit.

Hi Stewart, this is indeed a very thorny issue. I would suggest first of all that you do a search for previous threads on this issue as a lot of research work has been done. As a mechanical engineer I am one who has tried to ensure any advice on replacements is well researched and precise! Not everyone would agree. However, detailed research was undertaken and precise advice given. The problem now is that the precisely specified alternatives are getting very difficult to find.
I would have liked to have done the same research again to see if a precise option is available (and I am pretty sure it is, using a servo originally specced for a left hand drive car) but I simply have not had the time to research the extensive Lucas/TRW production spec sheets and current availability records.

I've recently found a new old part that needs a minor adjustment with the rod (aparrently) in terms of re-using my existing one which should fit the new servo (a circlip was mentioned).
I searched ebay for the correct brand new master cylinder part that are readily available and e-mailed a few reatilers asking if they had the "matching" servo. I had a few "no sorry mate" replies but one had a couple of old new stock servos in the back, not on their computerised stock system - I picked one up for £75. Not (had it) fitted yet but i'm quite pleased with getting a brnad new one at that price.

Hi Max, sounds like you may have a good deal there! Just so I can keep in touch with this issue, could you let me know the part number of the servo supplied please, it may have a useful aftermarket part code.
If it is definitely the right part then I guess there are other owners who would snap them up at that price.
I cannot remember if your original was Ford or SAAB servo?
If you are changing from SAAB to Ford I have a template which may help. if you are goinmg Ford to Ford the bulkhead mounting should be the same. Also the rod between the new servo and old master cylinder should be checked and might need very slight adjustment to ensure the servo rod isnt in permanent contact with the old master cylinder piston.
The rod at the pedal side shouldnt be too difficult and there are notes on previous posts about how to get the pedal position back right.

I'll dig the part number out when I get home - mine is an S3 so Ford to Ford. From memory, it's off an old Mk3 courier diesel van which the supplier checked as being identicle apart from the rod aspect described above. I imagine i'llhave it fitted at my mates local garage eitehr supported DIY one evening or as a paid job ;-)If it is definitely the right part then I guess there are other owners who would snap them up at that price.

Suppier said they're as rare as finding hens teeth in rocking horse manure and had a list price of £600+ (I thought the last bit a tad unrealistic!)
...been working on replacing my SAAB servo and master cylinder with same or the Ford one and had a heel of a job.
For info/part numbers I found these are the best bits of advice...

Finally got the last one from a guy called Hans in Holland who is occasionally mentioned in this context - but he has no more now...still a bloody expensive hobby, but even I have to brake sometimes and it would be good if they worked!

Thanks Andy.
Hi Max, I was very surprised recently to find a SAAB set up on a late S hence I just queried it. The late diesel courier van did have a correct servo. The reason for checking the servo to master cylinder clearance is that tests showed that the necessary small clearance between the servo rod and the master cylinder wasn't always present when we offered TRW servo and after market master cylinder together. This was a point raised by TRW.
