Been refitting it today, 2 problems I have encountered- the screw on the sender is just turning freely so I can't connect the wires to it properly - are the sender units still available?

You can also see that the straps aren't pulling up tight! - I'm presuming that on the front side the strap should go below the chassis plate and not above as I have it?

Plan A :Try a new screw, thread may be half stripped in the sender and half on the screw, a new screw gently tightened might do the trick.

Plan B : I think the thread in the sender is brass, screw a long brass screw in, solder it (if done with an iron and not a flame this won't be a danger), cut head off and use like a stud with a nut.

Plan C : cut something like this up and solder to sender then use a spade terminal rather than a ring terminal on the wire.

Plan D : New sender, discussed many a time in the past, try the "search"

Got a better photo to show what you mean about the straps?

Yes, straps should go under the cradle frame. Good work, I just did mine and did not enjoy it one bit!

If the terminal is turning I am not sure if you will ever get a good connection, you may repair the outside but what has happened on the inside? Regrettably, if you do try to solder it the inside is quite soft plastic and you risk damaging it anyway. It isnt expensive to replace.

Sender is available, it is one of those used on Landrovers. I got mine from Rimmer Bros 01522 568000.

Part number PRC8822P described as 'Tank Sender unit pre 86'. I paid £16.47 plus vat (2011 price). You may also need a new seal ring ARA1501 and locking ring ARA1502. The total bill inlcuding VAT and carriage was £24.48.

Not worth the risk of finding out the gauge doesnt work and having to strip the sender out later.

If you do buy a new one it isnt quite a matter of just sticking it in. You will find the long wire arm will need a little bending to get the right arc of travel (and to ensure it doesnt hit the first tank baffle) to ensure the gauge reads reasonably accurately. If you have any problems just email me.

Cheers both for your replies - I'm
Not to worried about the sender as its accessible from the wheel arch where the wheels removed, hoping I can get straps rights without dropping the tank again though as it was a pig of a job getting the cradle to lie up with the chassis mounting holes!!

As I'm fitting an inline filter between the tank & pump (one suggested and used on a previous post-from demontweaks with replaceable paper filter made by syntec) can I remove the current filter that comes after the pump completely or would this cause problems ( presuming its full of cr*p anyway)

Personally I would keep it, may have a higher filtration ability than the one you're looking at fitting?

Back together and taken for a short run, alls working well and no stuttering under load smile, I soldered a spade connector onto the fuel sender and it worked so pretty happy. Just got to get it the front on the ramps tomorrow so I can sort the exhaust properly where it joins the manifolds- thanks to everybody who contributed to my threads on the fuel tank - hopefully the sealer does it job and I can finally start using and enjoying a car that I've owned for over 4 years but barely driven for various reasons........testing it this coming week then hopefully driving to Paris on Saturday!!
