Just looking in the parts list on here I see it says 6580693 & 1643692 respectively for the Motorcraft part numbers - are these the part numbers my local Ford dealer parts desk will want?

Whenever I was getting bits for my wife's old Puma they always wanted the registration number which I can't imagine will be a huge amount of use (although it would be fun to give it to them and see what it came up with perhaps!)

They look like what Ford call a "Finis code" , basically a part number, Main dealer should recognise them but being for and engine that's now out of production for over 20 years they may no longer be available.

You may have to settle for "after market" products, Intermotor or similar?

I like the sellers comment "This part fits the vehicles listed above. Please do not ask if it fits anything else! If it would fit anything else, we would say".

Best not ask if it fits a TVR smile

One last thought, some cars had a diz cap with sticky up bits where the plug leads push on (like the tops of spark plugs), rather than holes they push into?

New leads, cap and rotar for less than £40 earlier this year (after market) at a local factors so at least they all match up being bought together.

Yes, my cap is the "male" type, like tops of spark plugs...

What are the chances of getting the right ones from the parts counter? My car has decent plug leads so don't really want to change them...

Shouldn't be difficult so long as you know male / female connector as you state (if a numpty like me can manage it I'm sure a parts counter should be able to - if thay can't maybe you're dealing with the wrong parts counter in the first place)

The male type, (like spark plug things) are referred to as SAE connectors, and can be very hard to find.

The more normal female time, (where the lead plugs in) are DIN connectors

Interesting - local dealer parts counter seems to be able to supply both, but the part number I gave him for the cap (6580693) he said was for the female terminal cap; the male equivalent is 1643632.

A quick google of that gives:

What do we think? Same thing?

Hmmm, I really need to get this sorted - the p/n on the cap in the picture doesn't seem to correspond with anything that I have read anywhere else.

Can anybody give me a definitive answer to where I can get a (decent) dizzy cap with male fittings? Ford parts counter preferred as I can just go and get it rather than ordering off the internet.

When I called them he gave me the p/n I listed above but I have low confidence as all he wanted was the registration number...

Couldn't you just take the old ones with you to the Ford garage(or wherever you choose to go to) and say: "I want the same as these?"
Just a thought- not sugggesting that you haven't already thought of this/tried it already

Probably the best plan - just not sure if they'll have them in stock.

Well, finally got around to taking cap & rotor arm into the Ford parts counter today and spoke to a helpful chappie.

Rotor arm is not a problem - 1643692 - and is available to order.

Distributor cap not so simple - mine is the male version. The one listed in the parts list on here I think is the female version, and in any case is discontinued (6580693). He searched for and found the alternative part number (1643632) but that is also discontinued - did manage to find some old stock at other garages though.

Just thought it worth the heads up that the genuine motorpart parts are now scarce and I guess that means most will have to fit pattern parts now.
