Has anyone ever hit any diesel patches on the road, and how exactly do they get there? Was speaking to a Tuscan owner (thread on ph) who suffered some nasty damage after hitting a patch at 10mph on a roundabout.

they get there from Lorry/Van Drivers over filling there Tanks and when they swing around the roundabouts it sloashes out.

Cant understand why they dont make the caps a better fit. But I imagine they musnt be sealed.

DIESEL SPILLS KILLS especially if your on the two wheeled motor transport.
Its like hitting some black ice.

at least on a motorbike you can smell the stuff (just after you hit it usually) - in a car the first warning you get is a nice slide...

Would they have an air release like a car tank to equalise pressure etc? Could come out of that perhaps?

10mph on a 90 degree turn, I went 180 not somthing I'd like to repeat. It's pretty common around where I work as there are a lot of trucks on an industrial estate.

Alot of spills in towns come from buses (I know this as in a previous life I used to drive them). The people who fill them up can have up to 200 to do at a time and sometimes they don't shut the cap properly so when you do a handbrake turn round a corner it tends to spill out. Desil is very dangerous when you hit it. A good trick is if you see a wet trail on the nearside of your lane stay off it it could be desil.

I 180deg by accident on a roundabout in Bedford a few weeks ago.

There is one place near the Land Rover garage in Milton Keynes that I have seen claim 3 rwd cars (BMW, Range Rover and MR2) in the last 3 years and one hot hatch. All hit the armco arse first. It pays to be careful accel hard out of a roundabout overtaking on a dual carrageway.

I now believe my 180 degree spin (see: www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=139565&f=11&h=0) was due to a diesel patch. The roundabout in question is indeed near to a petrol station.
