Ignition module removal HELP

This is doing my head in. I've got a replacement ignition module, but can i get the old one off without removing the dizzie. I cannot find a long reach socket that will fit, 6mm is to big 5.5 doesn't work. does anyone know what size the little fixing bolt is. May be I need a thin walled box spanner? Any ideas,please put me out of my misery.

That's a coincidence!

I tried taking one off just the other day, those two little bolts are very deep down in very slim holes.


I ended up grinding down a 7/32" socket to fit down there.

If you look in the distributor there are two more bolts the same size holding "something" in, this will at least let you find a socket that fits before you go grinding down the wrong size!




If you're in no rush, or don't have a selection of old sockets to "mess up" I can post you this one?

It was a spare one I had on the bench, just wanted to "work it out" so I was ready should I need to change one in earnest!

Did you get some heat sink paste with your new one (like a white grease) to smear on the mating surfaces?

Mike having read your posting I went straight out to the garage. The two bolts on the top of the dizzie are 8mm, it's a Motocraft. The two holding the module look to be smaller, it needs to be a very thin walled socket of tube spanner. I've looked in me tool chest I've got very size you can think of, except of course 7/32 so i would be grateful if I could borrow you special. I will return your other item at the same time.

Yes paste was included but I've got some which came from Maplin's used in computers.

No not them, these.... probably are metric, 5mm?

Are those screws possibly a BA size? Something like 4 BA?

5.5mm or 7/32" or 5BA should do it

Trust me to look at the wrong ones. Yes 5.5mm but needs to be a very thin wall socket to get in there. Your special would be welcome.

As suggested a ground down 7/16 socket it the tool. Yes I can now say that the module can be removed and replaced in situ, A flexable ratchet is helpful as there is very little space between the dizzie and the bulkhead bodywork. Thanks for your help as usual.
