Buzzing gear stick!
Discussion
My S3 is running well, but in third and fifth gear it develops a buzzing sound from the gear stick, which is driving me crazy. I replaced the plastic saddle hoping it would fix it, but it's still buzzing. It changes gear beautifully,so I'm hoping it's not something worn in the gearbox. Any ideas?

HI
I had the same problem and did as you have done. On further inspection I found that the vertical piece of the gear stick (where the knob attaches) is actually joined to the welded up extension piece via a rubber bush. This had very slight play in it. I squeezed it up in a large vice and not a hint of buzz since. Hope this helps. Andy

Although the new saddle did the trick this didn't last as after my run up to Stratford last year I have the buzzing again, mainly at 70mph.I removed the propshaft and had it balanced plus I replaced the worn gearbox mount too but still have the buzzing.
My gearstick is like phillpots so no joins as such.

Copied from a Capri Forum.....
" try this before anything else as it's quick and easy..oh yeah and cheap!
You will need to take centre console out first then one of those rubber straps that holds the jack in place in the boot with the eyelets at each end. Take the gearstick off and place one end over the gearlever and push it down to the base of the lever. Then thread the other end under the back off the gearbox (you will need to get under the car for this!) and back over the gearlever before fitting it back on...it will be a tight fit! This worked on mine and should get rid of most if not of the vibration"
I guess it looks a bit like this..... strap
