Fuel problem solved- turned out to be the wires had been crushed under the bolt/washer bolting the body to the chassis by the passenger sealt belt. This must have split the insulation causing the 2 wires to create the short. Wires have been wrapped in insulation tape & she runs fine now. Connectors were/are fine as they had been wrapped in tape also.
The gods must be liking me today-had visions of spending hours trying to trace the fault back through all the wiring. Having said that, they don't like me that much as the weather is too crappy for me to brave going for a blat.
