I want to put glass fibre matting around the brackets which connect the header to the folding frame to reinforce this joint. First though I need to do a bit of filling to smooth off the contours. Should I use P38 or P40? Which filler is most appropriate if I'm going to be covering with GF matting?
Personally, I would use the gf mat and resin first to create the strength, followed by p40 for the shape, which is also strong and more importantly waterproof. Then if this area is going to be painted and visible I would use the p38 for the final skim to get the smooth finish. Note polyester fillers are not waterproof so the thinner the skim the better and don't leave it untreated for too long as it will abdsorb water. If its not going to be visible forget the p38 altogether.
All IMHO ofcourse.

It's not going to be on show and it will need a degree of water resistance. It will be covered with waterproof material but nevertheless it is bound to get damp. So you would use the P40 after the matting? Not the other way round then? ie filling over all the lumps and bumps and then matting over the whole thing?
IMHO mat first as it will bond better to your clean (!) surface than the p40 mainly due to the liquid resin. Try to get all the air out if you can if the surface is very uneven you could fill with chopped mat pieces over the initial larger piece.
Happy to defer to those with better experiance but that's how I would do it.
