Rear Screen - Which choice?
Discussion
Hi all
I'm about to have my rear hood redone and have a choice of squared off screen or as the current style wrapping round the corner. Does anyone have any pics of a straight rectangle screen on their S? I've seen a few pics on Griffiths and Chims but not S.
What does anyone think or it it purely personal choice?
Thanks

That's because it is so very rare to see an S with the roof on, unlike the others you Does anyone have any pics of a straight rectangle screen on their S? I've seen a few pics on Griffiths and Chims but not S.

mentioned.

Seriously, a curved rear screen overlapping the B post sides would give better visibility when up, but would be very prone to creasing and splitting when folded down, especially in colder weather.
The choice, as they say, is yours
Edit: Just found a very rare pic of Austin with his roof on.
Purely for security reasons - he was parked up in a VERY dodgy place.

Top Tip:
When folding the rear hood down, always place a rolled-up towel "sausage" in the fold of the screen to prevent sharp creases.
I find a colour co-ordinated Versace towel with a gold thread grecian decoration at each end is perfect for the job.
Some people recommend a length of foam domestic pipe insulation, but I find this to be useless for drying yourself off after a downpour

Or you could use a real sausage, but it would have to be quite a big one. And again, it would not be very absorbent.

Was planning on going the "squared off" route when I replaced my hood but then a new old stock ex-factory hood came along at a fair price so went for that.
Swimming pool "noodles" are ideal packing to reduce creases

Hi
Yep I've got a length of foam similar to the noodle as my current hood is same as glenrobbo's above and it helps with creasing in those corners.
Aesthetically, anyone got any pics of the squared off hood screen just so I can see how it looks? It might look a bit neater by obscuring the roof stays but also. Igition reduce visibility and make the cabin slightly darker?
Cheers

Actually just found this. Ok it's not an S but it's easy to imagine how it'd look

Must admit, that is the way I shall be going when the hood requires replacement.
My Chim has that style of rear screen, it does create a bit of a blind spot when looking over your left shoulder. I`ve got used to it now though, my S has the standard screen, but I wonder how it would look with a screen like the piccie.John Giddings, the Trim Technician offers options, but he doesn't advise the standard shape which has a corner in the part that wraps round the side, that corner concentrates the crease when the hood is folded.
I must say however that what we agreed is very different from the last post.
I am happy that the sides on mine are orientated very similarly to the boot edges and give me a better view to the rear sides. My partner and I both feel that the car seems lighter inside.
One disadvantage is that the struts are now very much in views so I will have to keep them tidy or save up for Chimera ones!

Sorry I had to take the pics with the car in the garage, a few bits are still off the car. Sharp eyes will note changes underway with the warning lights for instance!

Must say Richard (greymrj), your car looks remarkably better than last time I saw it!! I am going with the verticals very near to the struts. I can count on one hand the number of times I have driven with roof on, so daylight etc. makes no difference to me.
Can't wait to get it back!!

I think you guys are being just a tad unimaginative. Here is a golden opportunity to get really creative:
How about recreating the shapes of the rear windows of those early Beetles?
Or the lenses of John Lennon's glasses?
Or those randomly sized circular windows on Virgin Galactic's Spaceship One?
Or the shape of the portholes on the alien craft that abducted Joe?
Or a series of epitrochoidal shapes? ( the shape of a wankel rotor* )
Or even a heart shape as it's so close to Valentine's Day?
C'mon, let your mind run riot! I do

- Interestingly, the autocorrect/ predictive text wants to change 'wankel' to 'Toyota'.
I thought it was Mazda who carried on with the development after Audi contracted Non-Specific Urethritis? Be warned, too much wankel is bad for you.

It makes you thirsty and use quite a lot of oil.
Don't have nightmares.
