I've got an oil leak somewhere on the front of the engine, passenger side and it looks like it is somewhere in the block. I've had a poke around and tightened up the oil pressure valve connection (is this a taper fit?) Are there any other recommendations on places where the 2.9 engine is know to leak in this area? I'm going to have a better look tomorrow and will probably start by cleaning all the accumulated gunge off first. But it would be good to be pointed in an obvious direction!

crankshaft front oil seal, even a tiny leak gets spread backwards when you're moving and covers everything.

They can leak at the bottom of the timing chain cover, this is where the timing chain cover has two gaskets. It has a gasket between the cover and the front face of the block and the cover sits on the sump gasket.

The leak is from the sump, it has been worn away at one point by contact with the exhaust box seam weld. I guess I can get it brazed, but it might be best to replace it, so a couple of questions:
- Is the sump pan the same on the 2.9 and 2.8 engines? (I have a 2.9)
- Any recommendations where I can get to get a replacement? (aside from eBay)

You could try one of the [url] Obsolete Ford Spares Specialists|

It should be pretty easy to get it repaired, lots of small firms who can do that sort of thing. I sold my second spare on ebay for much more than I expected! (Have one on the car and another on the engine I am slowly building!)

Not quite sure they are the same, although the later type rubber gasket fits both. To be sure, if you are buying a new gasket anyway, ask the tuning experts Burton Power; http://www.burtonpower.com/sump-gasket-rubber-type...

Thanks philpott and greymrj for the feedback. I went down to TVR101 as they are only a couple of miles away from me and we decided the best solution was to repair the existing sump, so I've spent the afternoon working on removing it - just need to remove the drop links from the anti roll bar in the morning. With the anti roll bar out I'm thinking it makes sense to replace the bushes and the drop links.

"it makes sense to replace the bushes and the drop links."

Please keep us informed. I didn't think the drop links were still available??

Thanks

I haver seriously considered modifying the sump on the engine I am building to give just a little bit more clearance at the front. There seems to be no shortage of oil capacity or clearance within the sump. I was thinking of gas heating and pressing in a section.

For a different fix can I suggest (after removing the contact risk that caused the problem in the first place), brake cleaner, emery cloth and then use this
Good luck with it what ever you do.

Try David Gerald. They were promoting S Series drop links a little while ago, more like the originals rather than the spherical "Rose" joint alternatives.

All sorted now thanks to the guys at TVR101; sump welded, new anti-roll bar bushes fitted, new oil filter and oil change. Drop links didn't need replacing, but the tyres do due to old age rather than wear.
