The type 9 gasket set doesn't fit the type of bell housing I have.

Any ideas where I can buy a gasket to fit ?

Also should there be an intermediate plate where the bell housing attaches to the engine ?

Do you really need one? Never seen one there on any detachable bell housings I've fiddled with.

If you really need a gasket, you can just pop along to your local engineering supplies stockist and purchase a sheet or roll of gasket material ( Klingerite or similar ) and knock one out on your bellhousing using a ball pein hammer ( gently! ) a bit like doing a brass rubbing, except the hammer is carefully used to cut the profile against the edges of the part. In the old days, most gaskets were knocked up on the job this way, ready made gaskets were something of a luxury.

Or you could just get a tube of instant gasket or some sikkaflex.

But to be honest, what needs sealing at that bellhousing joint?
I would have thought nice clean mating surfaces are all you need.....

Possibly for the earlier "Type 9" that had a full length layshaft rather than two stub shafts. That would require a gasket to seal the layshaft.

ETA, yes you should have a metal plate between engine and bellhousing

The front & back cover pages of last year's Burton Performance catalogue makes good gasket material if the cereal boxes are that little bit too thick.....

Chris,
How many bolts does your starter motor have to attach to the bell housing? I seem to have it in my mind that the 2.8 & 2.9 differ in this respect?

Just ignore me, my 2.8 has two bolts also.
I think I must have got confused with an old post by Phillpot re a Granada starter that had three bolts, must have been a different gearbox.

I have a cast alluminium bellhousing (Sierra XR4i ?), fits the 2.9 and a type 9 gearbox and uses a three bolt starter. The starter I have to match has the solenoid on the side (rather than top) so won't fit, it fouls the chassis irked

So Mike This should fit your three bolt starter option ?

Now you have to find me a new plate to match mine biggrin
