You got it.

With the battery in the boot it gives a convenient place to connect an inspection light, timing light etc. or even jump leads.

Have you thought of moving the battery under the bonnet, never understood this battery in the boot nonsense.

One of the most useful things on an S is that fact the battery is easy to get to!

Having it in the boot helps with some weight transfer though.

I'm not so sure. You sit almost on the rear axle, I would think with a driver (who's not a featherweight) and some fuel in the tank the weight would be fairly even, even with that boat anchor of an engine up front (which sits behind the front axle line, in fairness).

Who knows! Anyone got some decent corner weights? hehe

Hmmmm, not sure at all about the weight transfer theory. These cars go front light at speed, and inclined to oversteer (esp in wet), and are heavily biased to front braking, so moving weight back doesnt seem a good idea at all. Moving it into the boot helps tidy up the front, but reduces boot space and makes access harder. I remember the battery deep in the boot of the BMW328 was a right pain (in my back as well!). Personal choice. Anyway battery at the front gives an excuse for a nice stainless platform!

The front doesn't loose mass it gets lift from the air traveling above it making it feel light.
Having a heavy lump like the battery forward of the front wheels is not a great idea.
some of the best handling cars have weight bias to the rearsmile

I know you have tidied your engine bay up Alan, and I suspect you have also tested the car to the limit a few times!
Mind you mine is an S1 and there is no hope of tidying that engine bay up compared to a 2.9.

Off the topic a bit but I did start thinking whether the difference in front grill configuration on our two cars would effect lift a little bit? Not that I have had it go light on me but I have had an E type go light and I would prefer not to experience it again. Just wondering (wandering? My age you know!!)

For use above legal speeds I think they need a splitter to keep the nose down. I was thinking of making one from plastic gutter.
I have the ride height low which seems to help, makes lots of nice sparks in the peak districtsmile

Wrong, only live when I switch this.......... wink

The battery was moved to the boot because the battery tray arrangement looked like a case of some one realising at ten to five on a Friday that they hadn't allowed for a battery and the boss saying "no one goes home till you've designed a battery tray" !

batteries obviously aren't light but weight distribution was not a factor in my decision, making space for a remote oil filter/cooler was smile
