Brake Hoses/Lines/Connections
Discussion
Hi All
More questions I'm afraid - I did warn everyone this was going to happen once I started on the rebuild
So, I've been going through a number of previous posts about braided brake hoses & connections etc...
This will be my first attempt at doing a full set of brake lines/hoses/connections & am looking for all the advice I can get...
My car is a 1990 S3 V6 - upgraded front disc brakes & rear hub brakes...
1) Please can I have a link for the correct braided brake hoses (ideally blue, but not essential)
2) Please can I someone let me know where I can source the copper brake pipe from & how much (roughly) I'll need.
3) Please can someone tell me exactly which connectors I need for which bit (this is where I think I will really struggle) & where to get them from.
4) My upgraded disks I believe are 278mm (diameter) - although I might be out by a mm or so...I need to replace these as well, ideally with grooved discs - please could someone point me in the right direction for replacements...
Finally, please can someone point me in the right direction for all the bits (cable, connectors, adjusting 'bits') that I need to re-do the hand brake...
Many thanks for you patience & advices in advance...
Cheers
Jaye

are the brakes on the car or loose so you can take a calliper and drum backplate to a motorfactors? They can identify the threads for the ends.
Best to use conifer rather than copper - again this is normal car stuff and purchased at a motorfactors - comes in a 10mtre roll and that is more than adequate (
Braided hoses and ends can be purchased at a motorsport (rally or race) preparation place - if they don't have it they will tell you where to get them. I use Motoscope in Northallerton (North Yorkshire). Although relatively easy to make the hoses and ends up, you may wish to purchase made to measure. You need to know what ends and length (see item 1 above) and use wire along the route and measure the length. It is ok to completely use braided throughout - a little more expensive but not a lot.
For replacement discs lay it on a flat surface and measure the diameter and height, use these figures and there are a number of motorsport outlets that sell them (Demon Tweeks / Burton etc.)

I used

and have one of these that I've only used to make 1 set of pipes up for the V8S - I'd be willing to part with it if we can agree a price if you are interested.

You can get custom hoses made up as well...think I used this lot:
http://www.brake-lines.co.uk/create-your-custom-br...
I didn't bother with the ones on the back as they were short, difficult to get to, complicated as to which unions were on each end, etc, and on drum brakes it probably would make much difference.
On the front I switched to a single line through a grommet on the stub axle, rather than two separate lines, cheaper and more efficient. If i remember correctly, they were 900mm lengths to work (sounds far too long, but it wasn't)

Hi All
Many thanks for your responses - I shall bookmark the subject accordingly, ready to refer back to your knowledge when the time comes - a little more research to do, whilst I save up the appropriate funds, & then I shall 'crack on'.
Be warned - there might be more questions
Many thanks again

Hints:
Buy the flexi hoses first. That way you'll which unions to fit to the solid pipes, and which type of flares to use. Goodridge do the correct 6-piece kit many of these cars have (the fronts are often in two sections with an intermediate solid pipe in an S-bend shape in the middle, reason being if you had one long continuous hose it would likely foul the spring/damper assembly on compression and with full lock on, so if you have two separate hoses on the front end, keep it that way.
HEL has a custom-hose creator, and the hoses are very good quality. Work out about £25 each plus VAT. My S1 has 11 of them. I know, don't even go there.....
Kunifer (which is what Magpie was alluding to, rather than a type of tree) pipe is better than copper, but slightly pricier. It's still copper, but with added nickel. In reality it makes no difference, but in many years to come the Kunifer will corrode less and resists work-hardening better, so if you're got it in bits, makes sense to use it. You can buy rolls of it on eBay, though the cheapest stuff doesn't come polished (sounds daft, but it can look nice in the engine bay if you do a good job, so for the sake of a few quid.....)
If you're fitting discs to the rear, remember the flexis need to attach to the calipers too. You can either run a really long flexi from the chassis mount all along the arm to the caliper (less visually pleasing) or run a short section from chassis to trailing arm, then a shaped pipe, then another short section from caliper to said shaped pipe.
It's pretty easy stuff.
