Hi to you all great forum btw been reading for about 6 months but this is the first time I have been brave enough to contribute.
Has anybody solved the mystery of the part number for an S3 alternator, the alternative parts list quotes a Lucas LRA 125 (65 Amp) which does not appear to exist. Me and my 7 week old son Sam (Loves the sound of the S ) have just spent half and hour looking at lovely pics on the Lucas web site but no joy . Checked with the local Motor factors and they also don't recognise the number so we looked at a few for the Ford 2.8/2.9 but all the output currents appear to be wrong (55, 70, even 100). Could anyone help before I resort to taking it of and harassing the guy in the motor factors even more than I have already.

Whitty,
I would think that any alternator for a Granada?Ford 2.9i engine should do the trick.
I wouldn't be too worried about getting a 70 amp or a 100 amp unit, providing the mounting bracket is the same. Just don't go for a lesser output alternator.

I got an exchange unit for my S for £70 at my local motor factors - hopefully they will allow you to take the recon one away on the understanding that as soon as you're mobile you give them the knackered one in exchange.

Can be a bit of a b***er to get the old pulley off the original unit - be prepared for a bit of swearing!!

Hi, Car parts direct stock them, with no exchange required. I got a lower rated replacement (50amp?), £60 plus vat. It fitted mechanically but had a different wiring connection, no big deal. But if I were you I would get teh bigger one (I forget, 75 amp or somthing). That may have the same wiring connector.

They have the S on the books, so just ask, 01623 658041 or www.carparts-direct.co.uk

Cheers for the advice guys, Think I'll strip the old one tomorrow and have a ride down to the factors in the turbo shed . They were quoting about £38 plus vodka and Tonic for a recon exchnage on a similar 75amp which looks to be a bloody good price. Let you know how I get on.

Stripped it and took it for a test at the local auto electricans 13.8 at 80 Amps, so that won't be the alternator then . Did get the part number though, the Bosch as fitted to the 2.9 and pictuered in the Bible on page 104 is Part Number FRA671 in the Q&H book, this is a 90 Amp monster that was also fitted to the XJ6 etc.
