Lots of other monickers on cars mean at least something - GTi, VTEC, M, etc.

Does the S mean anything? I assume it has something to do with looking a bit like the 3000S.

Anyone know? Or come up with something amusing?

Yes, it stands for sports, as in convertible, from the 3000S as does most of the styling and idea of the car. It was a cheap car and cheap fix to save the company - and it worked very well.

In comparison to other cars of similar performance, TVR's have always been considerably cheaper.

Outstanding value for money IMO.

I beleive the 'M' Was due to Martin Lilley TVR owner at the time and hence the 10nr special edition TVR Martins.

Am no help with the 'S' though.. sorry

Perhaps to differentiate from the 280i (ie Tasmin) it was called 280S, then 290S then S2 and S3. I think the orginal ads said "TVR Convertible" - as did the 3000S!

TVR had used S2, S3 and S4 before - for the Vixen series.

Was there ever a 290i?

It was called the S, then the S2, etc. Quite a good guide can be found here www.pistonheads.com/tvr/s/Default.asp?storyId=3273 The 280S type of name was a legal thing for the log book only.

No, he RV8 based Tasmin Series was well established by the time that the 290i would have been available and the V6s could not find any buyers then.
