My temperature gauge has been reading very high recently. So I carried out an experiment
Had an old mechanical gauge which I heated in an old kettle. Boiling point showed at about 93degC. Then put both the mach and elec sensors in the kettle and slowly heated up

so I recon my 88degC thermostat will open when the dash gauge shows about 110degC !!!

I did use an infra-red thermometer a week ago when I took the Tiv to work and that showed the temp about 80 when up to temperature - so this confirms that

Are you using the sender unit from the original engine?

Those little sender units come in different ranges according to the colour band on them. Maybe you have the wrong one?

This is the problem. The gauge is S and the sender is BOA

Wanted

I might have a spare one Mick, depends if there was one on one of the engines I bought a few years ago. I will check and let you know and if so I can bring to Barn Farm.

Assuming Tvr 2.8s are the same as any other cologne 2.8, then the t-stat should be 82o, especially as it sits in the cold outlet rad hose.

Morning Mick and Mike! wavey
I have checked the engine in my car. It isnt original and came from a late Capri, but the temperature gauge certainly appears to be right, judging especially from Eurotour! It has a mid brown colour and carries the number 334H.
I have found the one out of the old engine from the car and that, although slightly different in form (it stands higher above the alloy casting and has a larger hex) also carries 334H and is brown (albeit noticeably lighter!) it also carries the ID 'H9'.
I also have a third one which I suspect is aftermarket as it is not marked at all, that is very pale brown! I will bring them to Barn Farm with me.
Mick, can you identify colours or codes from that?scratchchin

new 334H sensor being picked up in the morning - to be 'kettle' tested then fitted and the system refilled prior to the run down to Barn Farm
