I've hit a problem with the last of the bearing replacements on the diff'.
The pinion nut, not the one on the flange but the one located on the shaft shown below:

I don't have a socket deep enough to fit the nut, and it looks like a special tool is required. Does anyone konw if a special tool is required and if it's possible to get one outside of Ford?

The specialist tools are only used for removing / installing the oil seal, as far as I can see. To undo the nut I think you just need to get a suitable long reach socket, or find a box spanner that is up to the job. I assume you can find a way to hold the flange in place, but the Ford tool shown in your link doesn't look specific to the diff. TVRees said:

That's the tool for taking the oil seal out (aka a large screwdriver)Probably only available from Ford.
looking at the diff overhaul manual 15-073 is the tool for undoing it, it's a long reach splined socket, that goes onto the splines the flange was fitted to. There's a special tool 15-090 that looks pretty much like the end of a ring spanner with a bit welded on, the spanner bit goes on the nut and the welded on bit goes over the nose of the diff around to the front most mounting point and is bolted to the outside of the diff. It says to turn the shaft anticlockwise which to me makes that nut left hand thread.
