Does anyone have any suggestions? I know with stands the bigger area they cover the better.

Trolley jack what should I pay? Any recommendations welcome.

Cheers

depends what you want to do... for routine maintenance then a couple of little stands will be fine - i had 2 wee ones and 2 big ones, lent the wee ones to somebody and it's now pretty clear I won't be getting them back. I don't use the big ones on the S because they're just too big and awkward

PLUS you need a trolley jack that's small enough to fit under the chassis, yet with enough lift to get stands under - and unless you pay a lot, you either get low jack low lift, or high lift but doesn't fit under. Big stands don't help in this bit of the equation!

I want the stands for routine maintenance. I am getting frustrated that I cannot easily get underneath the car. I had not considered that I might not be able to get the jack under the car. I suppose that this is compounded by the fact that the most convenient surface is a gravel drive.

Pies - they're not MY old Halfords stands are they? Who did I lend them to?

My Halfords trolley jack cost £30 or something 10 years ago, and has paid for itself. It fits under the chassis from the front - just.

Oh! Cover the jack head in something so you don't damage the chassis coating - I used a small bit of carpet and half a roll of gaffa tape.

Thanks all for the above.

I noted that a Halford's jack and stands are on sale on ebay. But I think if the cost is so insigificant I will go to the store and pick the items out myself.

I bought mine in Maccess. £7 for the stands and less than a £10 for a 2 tonne trolley jack. Lovely jubbly.

Halfords stands are good value for money. Trolley Jack wise. I use a Sealey Trolley jack. But it's pretty huge, and not at all portable. But quite safe.

I went to Halfords today and bought a trolly jack and stands. It seemed good value. They were all marked down for some reason today.

I just need to work out where to put them now!

cheers

Place the on the main chassis members
as below

Use some wood or rubber on the top of jacks and stands

Hope that helps

Clean everything in-situ - the chassis powder coating is still original.

I definitely wouldn't do the former. The idea of the cup in the stand is to stop thing sliding about and sticking a big bit of wood in it will allow the car to move. I found this out when mine fell off such an axle stand, happily I wasn't under it and the stand didn't hit anything as the car came down. The rubber in the second picture is by far the more sensible.

As I said earlier, I cut a couple of bits of old carpet on mine and gaffa-teped them in place - restricts damage, but the location cups still work.

Thanks for all the above.

I must get some photos of the underside of mine (once I have worked out the fotango thing). The previous owner painted the chassis last winter. It's not bad, not at all.
