Time for new front discs. Am I likely to need a 'wind back tool for the calipers or will a bit of wood and some stilsons suffice?

front piston should push back in relatively easy.

Not sure what you intend doing with the stilsons!

Front calipers won't need winding in , block of wood should do it , rears if you have them and they are ford ones will need winding in for pads or discs etc.
Hope that helps.

S3 so discs on front only. I already wrestled with the rear shoes last year

Front pistons just need steady pressure to push them back. Remember to clean the caliper, reseat the pads and preferably flush the brake fluid through on the first side before you start on the other side. If you try to do both sides at once without reseating the pads, you're likely to overflow the reservoir.

Are they not sliding calipers? i.e only one piston?

Wind-back tool needed on rear, not front. G-clamp does the job, or your thumbs if the calipers are schweeeeet!

Pretty sure the threaded pistons that need the tool are only on calipers with the handbrake mechanism, but that's just a hunch.

Absolutely. When I wrote 'one side', I meant one side of the vehicle.

OK Fair enough - I didn't think that far ahead (so nothing new there)!

Tool for changing a grinding disc works brilliantly on the rears.

Absolutely, wind back is only required with rear calipers without separate pads for hand brake.

And job completed - excellent advice as always, calipers pushed back easily with a piece of wood.
