Hi,

I am in the process of reassembling my 2.9i Ford Cologne engine after a problem with the cam shaft and followers.

I'm considering using either Victor Reinz or Payen head gaskets. Does anyone have any recent experience of using either of these or any general recommendations on head gaskets? In the past I have used Ajusa head gaskets but am now finding it hard to track some down.

Many thanks

Andy

Payen is the only one of those brands I've heard of! I'd go with them. These old engines are not prone to head gasket failure so i don't think there's much need to get too fussy?

Guess you know head bolts are "stretch" and need replacing?

what was the problem with the cam and followers?

Thanks very much for this.

One of the cam followers wore out losing about 60 thou off the base of it, badly damaging the cam lobe. I suspect that the cam follower wasn't properly hardened from the outset.

Yes thanks, I'm aware that the stretch bolts need replacing every time - I already have a new set.

I have built ford/mini engines for racing and used payen gaskets, check block/head faces are true, torque settings are ok so fire ring doesn't get overly crushed etc. No problem with Payen.

Gaskets for Classics don't seem to have any 2.9 gaskets in their eBay store. Let me know if you find a good source for Payen or Felpro (or equivalent quality brand).

It's worth a phone call, I was after "something" wasn't on Ebay store but they had them.

Is this a fair price for Payen?

I think that Felpro now part the same group that Payen are, worth a call to Euro Car Parts, I suppose that the price you got for the set was ok, I pay £12 for Payen head gaskets for a mini, paid £11 for two rocket cover gaskets for my S3.I use a factor called Bennetts, I don't know were you live.

Reinz Gaskets are also a very good product.

If Reinz do a set try ECP, I have bought their products from them.

You could also try GSF for Reinz.

I've got a pair of genuine ford gaskets for the 2.9 if you're interested. No longer any use to me now I've moved on to the V8S.

Let me know if you want them - I'm sure we can sort something out.
