TBH the timing is very engine specific and not adjusted lightly IMHO. The wrong timing setting, I assuming you mean igniton advance here, you can destroy your engine in quick time or it could seriously underperform.
Safest is set it up at 26-28 deg @ 4krpm with vac advance disconnected, don't worry what it is at tickover too much so long as the engine is happy. Take it for a drive see what it feels like and listen for pinking etc, if it feels sluggish advance it and drive again, but IMHO no more than 30-32 deg max though don't forget to disconnect vac advance on adjusting and reconnecting on driving though .
Best set up on the rolling road IMHO but not always possible.
Re exhausts speak to Tim Lamont at ACT about getting some JP exhaust bits, he can supply them cheaper than they will supply you direct .

Sound advice, but the amount of advance the engine can tolerate will vary hugely. For example some people run between 24-28 depending on fuel, but mine was running 32 deg on 95 octane without problems. Even now it's running 29 deg with the same compression ratio, and hardly pinks at all as long as I run 97 octane and WI.

I won't say what some of my 3D mapped reading are but some of them may make your eyes stand out if it were a dizzy car .
Agree though on dizzy drive mine could take 32 deg run on 95 ron and not pink, however, it was down on power at those levels and was much happier at around 29-30 deg with 97/98 ron .
