Bonnet catches

The S has had a bit of a 'rattle' coming from the front end for a while. I don't think its anything suspension wise because I can't feel it through the steering or the pedals.

I have a suspicion it could be the bonnet catches as both of these seem a bit loose. With the bonnet down and locked in place, I can push both sides of the bonnet down at least 1cm, if not more. What is 'normal' on an S ?

I guess any slack could be reduced by tightening the bolt that winds up the sprung loaded catch on the bonnet underside. Any risks involved with doing this such as the bonnet not wanting to release if I tighten too far ?

If you go too far, then you may have a problem getting the bonnet to open again. Providing you don't go mad with the tensioning when it sticks you can pull the lever and get some one to gently wiggle the bonnet until it's open then back the tension off. You may need to adjust the bonnet hinges if it's sitting too high.

That's my concern. I guess a little bit at a time then.

And I think you're right, the hinges will need adjusting as there is no clearance at all between the front of the wing (in the wheel arch) and the underside of the bonnet.

This may be why you have a large gap at the rear.(No nob or ar*e gags). As the bonnet pivots from the front, and low down then and inaccracy will become larger the further back it goes.

Point taken Chris. I'll go trawling the S owner profiles and see what is 'normal' for the bonnet / wing gap.
