I was doing some cleaning in the S2 engine bay yesterday and noticed that one of the two injectors (nearest the windscreen) was loose and could be 'wiggled' using my fingertip. Is this normal?

I'm concerned that this may impact performance if not dealt with asap.

That doesn't sound right. You should find the injector flexes slightly in its seals as you push on it, but it shouldn't move freely.

Thanks Peter,
just had another look. It's definitely too loose. Looks like a pain to get to though. Now where's my SH Bible...?

I don't know how familiar you are with engines and this engine bay in particular, but before you go much further just double check that the loose thing is definitely a fuel injector and not any of the sensors in that area (they do look similar).

If you're sure it is the injector then I wonder why it is loose. I would expect to find an O ring seal top and bottom which push into the fuel rail and inlet manifold respectively. If the O ring has split or perished that end of the injector could be loose. You would also get an air leak at the bottom or a fuel leak at the top. A fuel leak would be immediately obvious, and air leak would cause poor running at part throttle. You should be able to get replacement seals but don't use any old O ring, you will need to get the correct seals from an injection specialist. On some systems the injector is located vertically by a spring clip. If the clip fails then the injector can move far enough to disengage the bottom seal. Don't know if this is applicable for this engine though.

I haven't done it on that engine, but the layout looks broadly similar to the V8 where you would take the top off the plenum and then remove the trumpet base to get access to the fuel rail. On the RV8 this lot comes off in about ten minutes with the right tools, I imagine the V6 would be similar. Obviously, any work in this area introduces the risk of dropping things into the engine, which is a BIG nono.

It may take a little longet than 10 min to put it back together though. Trying to align the injectors in the rail and squeeze the o-rings in a a bugger. Oh, and remember to mark each wire so you know which one goes back where. Also, there are small seals for the injector electrics, if you loose them you will never find them again.

Thanks chaps.

I have 2 problems. 1) I can't find my SH Bible!! No doubt it's been 'tidied up'. 2) I don't have the correct tool for removing the plenum.

I've decided I'm going to get a pro to do the job instead. Unless anyone's in the Epping/Essex border area who could give a second opinion??
