I can't believe this is right

Took off my dash yesterday and decided to drop the steering column because I have hands the size of shovels and was surprised to find that that the two bolts just had large washers and the holes in the casting were much larger than the bolt threads.

I would have thought that there should be a shouldered collet of some description keeping the bolts centred in the holes, can this be right?

Mine is the same. I am guessing that this is to allow for minor adjust and optimum alignment (probably on the original Ford).

Providing the washers are there, I don't see any real problem with it as there is no real load on the column.

I do agree though, that collets or shouldered bolts would be better.

BTW Colin thanks for the write up, it helped me loads this weekend and I managed to pass on a few tips to others who were attempting the same job.

I can't believe so many people are taking off dashes this time of year, are we all mad?

In my case, I plead long leadtimes at AR Pound.
Hopefully worth the wait.
