Chaps, apparently the QH FC49 radiator cap is no longer in production, so I am a bit stuffed. Anyone have an alternative for a long-throw cap that will fit the S2's cooling system? Even knowing how long the spring section needs to be would help (my car has been running a wrong cap - flushing and cleaning out the cooling system means that it is now pressurising properly and the cap's weaknesses have been shown up).

Help me! She's chucking coolant everywhere :(

Could be worse....
Just had the top coolant hose burst

Was chucking coolant for at least 3m!!
Now I find this part is also 'discontinued'

(However, if you cut the centre out of the hose 4042235 from Ford, it fits perfectly)

Th FC49 that's the 10lb one isn't it?

I tried it but I must be generating more than 10lbs of pressure becuase the water just exited out the over flow.

I've gone back to the standard 15lbs 'short' cap and slipped an extra ring of rubber behind the seal at the end of the spring which seems to be doing the job nicely.

I've also considered getting the swirl pot modified to take the short cap, it shouldn't be that difficult but I've not done any investigation on that one.

I got a replacement from tvrcarparts the other day which was a 13lb pressure cap that fits and does the job perfectly.Infact I have put it on the pressure tank rather than the swirl pot just to see if it makes any difference...none at all.Still holds water fine on both.

The one I took off was a 15lb one but tvrcarparts said they were told this one would do just as well on the 'S'and they are right.

They bought several as anticipated more calls.
Give them a ring?

Tip the worms into the swirl tank, they should help the pressure cap seal properly, downside is they might clog up the radiator.

(The worms from the can you just opened.)

Alternatively if you want the boring conventional answer just put the standard 15 lbs pressure cap on the plastic header tank and the blanking cap on the swirl tank. Half the people will tell you this is wrong, half will tell you it is right. I'm in the 'right' camp.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. The worms should go in the plastic header tank, not the swirl pot.

That used to work fine - but now that system is pressurising properly after an overhaul, it doesn't work anymore!

Haha - pressure cap from tvrcarparts on the way, thanks to you chaps.

GreenV8; I expect the problem is that now all the sludge and gunk is out of the system, water is flowing and pressurising quickly; the limitations of a cap that wasn't long enough to seal properly are resulting in leaks from the overflow as pressurised coolant is simply getting blown out.

Or at least I bloody well hope that that's it...

Where is it getting blown out from, exactly? If it's the overflow on the header tank, that would suggest that te cap isn't sealing properly, which might be because the sealing face is damaged or corroded (corrosion is quite possible if you've run it for an extended time with the caps the other (wrong) way round.

Seems being wrong is the same as being right,
I tried running mine both ways round and it dont seem to make any difference. I can cook it whichever way, driven hard enough!!!!!! But then mine is the go faster colour.

Swirl pot and sometimes header. You are absolutely right; both caps are knackered and the seals are like cardboard - but the short throw on the pressure cap can't be helping, so I thought I would replace with something as close to proper spec as possible.
