Spot Diagnosis: Engine noise

2 questions really:-
1)The engine in my V8S is making a 'rattly/ticky' noise. It's by no means horrific but is audible over and above the exhaust note. It's been getting steadily more audible over the last 2 months. Seems like it doesn't impact on the driveability of the car except to say that the engine can be heard to 'pink' if accelerating reasonably swiftly. Overall it 'detracts' from the usual experience of listening to the engine (ie. pleasure) and is annoying.
Any ideas? Could it be cam wear...?
Which leads me to question...
2)I bought the car with 12 month warranty from a very reputable TVR garage. The relevant clause in the warranty t&c's states: "...push rods, camshaft and followers, timing gears and chains (excluding tensioner)..."
Does that mean I'm covered for repair? Or does it usually have to fail completely before they'll touch it?
Be grateful for anyone sharing previous experiences...

What fuel are you using?
Over the last couple of weeks I have been caught low on fuel. This has caused me to use standard 95 instead of my usual Optimax diet. The result seems like pinking at anything above 3,500rpm. I fuelled up with Optimax yesterday and did a few miles, the result smoother performance and no pinking!
P.s I went to see your car the day you bought it, cash in hand! You just beat me. The result was I bought another well known grey V8.

Paul, I also booked an appointment to view that car on the day you bought it - and was very miffed on arriving to find that they had sold it!
Christian, am I right in thinking that your car is the concours winner from Cheshire? I dreamed of owning that one but alas my budget was too low.
Fortunately I bought one which I am very pleased with. As for your "rattle" - I hope it is nothing to worry about. At times my engine sounds a bit rattly, but I assumed they all sound like that!

If it is a leaking manifold gasket then the ticking will usually get a little worse under load, and be much reduced at idle / over run. The lifters / cam will usually tick all of the time, although you can usually find a sweet spot where they are most noticeable in the rev range. It will not be dependant upon load as the exhaust will.
My exhaust manifold gasket is blowing at the moment, but I think I’ll wait for the winter before tackling it.

Echo the responses so far . . . exhaust manifold split most probably; presuming you have the original cast manifolds - or progressively wearing cam lobes? Engine noise seemed to quieten down considerably after I replaced both manifolds recently with s/s jobbies from ACT and I found a pinhole split in the centre of one of the originals I took off that I'd never have suspected.

I would agree that it is likely to be the manifold. My V8S had similar symptoms a couple of years ago. Annoying ticking when engine under load, especially when cold. Mine was due to a crack in the manifold, invisible to the naked eye as it was hidden between the pipes where they make the 88 shape. I had a new manifold fitted which cured the problem. Also had Y the piece replaced while they were at it as it was on its way out.
New RH manifold - £137.20
Y piece - £94.50
Labour - £34.00
Gasket, bolts etc - £5.36

Looks like a need a new fuel tank, it has a rusting hole in the bottom, apparantly.
David Geralds have one but its fairly expensive. So thought I may scout about for one first.
Any idea's where I can source a tank ?
( I may be able to have the original repaired)

On the noise front , I had some tapping (sounded very serious) It was the exhaust manifold gaskets.
I had blow a piece of gasket clean out, sounded awful under load.
I just had both done recently. If your gaskets are gone or the manifold is leaking, you may get more popping and banging as a result.
This may help you to diagnose (sp)
