For the last couple of weeks, I am experiencing intermitant 'knocking' sounds from underneath the car (an S3).
It doesn't appear to come from the engine, more from the passenger side.
It sounds like the exhaust is loose from a metal bracket. However, I drove over a pit the other day and had the exhaust system checked. All tight and no problems.
The rattle is normally detected when changing up from gears in low revs from a junction. I don't normally hear anything different when cruising.
I don't get any rattle sounds when I go over bumps, pot-holes etc, therefore, I don' believe it is anything 'hanging off.'
Any of you experienced mehanics, got any ideas?
I have had the front springs and shockers done last November.
Please help! I don't want to be the one that 'rattles' when we meet up at Silverstone!

Diff mounting bushes???

I've got a knocking at the rear under acceleration and cornering - and speaking to people this seems to be the cause, I got a pair the other week - just haven't got round to changing them yet!

Ive got a knocking on my S2 from the rear end, and it it the joints. Grab your drive shafts and try twisting them foward and backwards, also push and pull left and right and see if you have any play in them. It may well be your CV joints, I have yust ordered 4 at a cost of 127 quid. page 198 of the bible shows a pretty picture of them and the text is also very helpful. Good luck.

I too am getting a knocking, sounds similar to your problem. I think ive got a worn mounting (engine/gearbox)resulting in a bit of excess movement now and again. I think the noise is the gearbox knocking against something?

I have heard that the gearbox mounting is regular problem.

Also would be worth checking the propshaft UJ's. Not easy without dropping the exhaust.

Congratulations to STEVE J looks like you are right, with the CV joint, however, the last two days of sunny motoring have been free of noise, just typical!
