Am still progressing with the rebuild and its looking good. However one small point - is the fan belt on a S3 the same as a standard Granada one ?
Its not properly tensioned yet but the upper part of the belt looks extremely close to the water pipes feeding the swirl pot. I do n't remember it sitting this close before I dismantled it !

No. The Granada has it's alternator in a different position to the S. I used a Quinton Hazell QBA1200 (1200mm), but the length may vary depending on how close it gets to the top hose.

Some belts are close enough to cut through the hose (see above).
The Granada uses two (sometimes 3) fanbelts - one to drive the waterpump and power steering pulleys, and a smaller one one to drive the alternator separately (I think the third drives the air con but mine didn't have air con so I'm not sure).
The part that Roy mentions is the bigger of the two Granada ones, and is the correct one for the S. I bought a 1200 mm Halfords one but haven't put it on yet.

Yeah the belt does run very close to the top hose, and it's not unknown for the belt to cut into the rubber hose.
On mine I have cut a small section out of the hose and inserted a short metal tube at that point. As the metal tube is thinner than the rubber one it gives a bit more clearance and is a bit less likely to be cut by the fan belt.

The belt is indeed a 1200mm item often numbered as 13v1200 or 13/1200 the 13 being the belt width in mm, this is important as if you get a 10v1200 belt will be far too long when fitted as it will sit too deep in the V's of the pulleys. I changed mine earlier in the week as part of the service, I also bought a 13v1150 to see if it would squeeze on,as fitting a shorter belt will mean the alternator wont swing so far when tensioning and should give more clearance between belt and top hose,it wouldnt go on though.. A 13v1175 might go if you can get hold of one but my supplier didn't stock that size...

I have had this on my S2 and cured it by putting two large tiewraps around the top hose and onto the plenum chamber. This lifted the hose by about an inch, plenty of clearance. But the the steel pipe is another way of giving more clearance, whatever you fancy doing and what you are happy with I suppose.
