Hi Gys,

The beast :) managed 118.9 dB on the noise meter at SCH3. Way to loud for a trackday. I'm told I could get trackday silencers or mufflers or some such to resolve this. Snetterton for example often has a limit of 105 dB - so I'd need to lose 14 dB or so to comply. Anyone recommend something that would do the job - short of ripping the exhaust off and replacing it with some contemptibly timid bit of drainpipe ?

Thanks,

WG

I am going to try some silencers but not until October.... to be honest I think you may struggle as 13+ dbs is a lot to loose... but hey better than 123.5dbs to start with

Oh boy ! You are in trouble

Seriously though - I was hoping it might be possible to lose around 13 dB, though I guess it's going to be tricky - and it's probably a problem independent of the S itself.

To be honest I am not sure how the sound is measured for a track day but I am sure someone will know... it may be that the measurement they use would be lower to start with..

It's something like, rev the engine to 4500rpm whilst stationary and the meter is held at 45 degrees to the end of the exhaust. Not sure of the distance - something like 1m I think.

No idea whether thaat would be more or less than that measured at SCH3.

I've got a couple of sets of tailpipe inserts that are typically worth 4-6 dB, and some external cans that give the same again. This is about as much as you;re going to get with the easy bolt-on options. You need more than this and the only way to get that much reduction is by adding silencer volume. ACT made a custom twin pipe silencer that got Sean's SEAC down to under 105 dB and I think you need something similar.

That's annoying - you mean the silencer would have to live on the car - not just on Trackdays ?

What about tuscan style motorcycle silencers that could bolt on the end of the exhaust pipes. It may look a bit silly, but surely this would give a fair decrease in noise.

When we used to try and get rally cars onto tracks, we used to stuff loads of wire wool into the exhaust ends and then secure it with one of the 'trackday silencers' available commercially - then drive very carefully to scrutineering, use the minimum required revs for the minimum time! (Even worked for 6R4s). As the day wore on and the wire wool burnt out, car got noisier! Think nowadays the RACMSA (motorpsort govening body) have cracked down on 'noise nuisance' and the tracks are more aware of their environmental impact (not as much fun to watch at though!).

Danny,

At the TVRCC Castle Combe track day, my S2 was measured at 103 dB (their limit was 100 dB), but the exhaust is getting a bit "tired". I got it down to 99.999 dB by fitting a single "can" on one of the tail pipes from those nice people at Merlin Motorsport (in the paddock). The problem is that most V6 S's have their tail pipes close together which makes adding extra silencing very difficult.

118.9 dB is quite a lot, so you may need a lot of extra silencing (TVRMark has an amoury of "rocket-launchers" that he fits to his S3 to scrape under the noise restrictions).

No, the system Sean used was a big silencer sideways across the back of the car, both tail pipes went into the front of it and it had an outlet at each end (handy to split the noise across two outlets because this reduces the measured noise level for close range tests).

The smaller tailpipe cans I mentioned push over the tail pipe and are similar in principle to the Tuscan cannisters - but don't look nearly as pretty, and probably cost about 1/10 as much.

I noticed these on the ACT website - as Roy says though - the S3 exhausts are right bang next to each other rather than opposite sides - which would stuff up putting the silencer sideways - mores the pity.

Looking at the GoldTrack website - I notice that Silverstone has "noisy" days - definately good news

I think I'd better drop the man a line haven't seen him on here for ages.

Thanks guys,

Not necessarily: the system Sean used had both tail pipes going into the side of the silencer, and this approach would work whether the tail pipes were 2" apart or 20" apart. Give Tim a call and see what you think. It's fugly, no two ways about it, but if that's what it takes to get you on track without replacing the whole exhaust system then it's better than nothing.

I've sent ACT an email - will let you know how I get on ...
