Diff mounts...clunking noise.

I was getting a clunk from under my seat when letting the clutch out. Having recently.. like yesterday.. had the two front resilient mounts replaced on the differential. I was told that the big one at the back was sound. Well alas...I am still getting the same old clunk, if a tad reduced. I would be much obliged if any of you chaps have got any ideas as to what might be the cause...

Well if the diff is properly mounted, then that only leaves backlash in the prop shaft, the driveshafts or the diff itself.
All you can do is get a hand each side of each joint (for example around the prop shaft and the diff flange) and twist and feel for play. Feel eaqcj joint and then tset to see if there is excessive play in the diff - there will always be some but not too much.

errr- I thought they all did that!! (mine does anyway).
Use to get it on my XR4x4 as well - never caused any problems there. Isn't it just the initial aligning of the prop-shaft as it picks up the torque from the engine and meets resistance (i.e the wheels on the ground)? I suppose you could test that theory by jacking the rears clear of the floor and seeing if you still get the clunk?

Might be worth dropping the exhaust and checking the prop shaft UJ's and drive shaft CV joints while your grovelling under the car.
SotonS2 was convinced he had a bust gearbox until he pinned it down to dry CV joints - - A couple of quids worth of grease and he was on the road again!
It is suprising how easily rumbles/knocks/noise are transmitted along the drivetrain.
