Just took the S out and it felt odd from the moment I took it up the road....

Seemed to surge a bit and when you depressed the clutch the power seemed to drop off instantly... which I know it does but more so than usual. Seemed lurchy at low revs and when I got it on the drive tickover, which is normally very steady.... was hunting continuously between 800 and 1100 rpm. Does it sound like the TP has gone?

Is the only real test to replace it and where are people finding the cheapest place to buy them at the mo?

thanks

Paul

search is down at the moment so I can't have a look at previous threads!!

Following a post here I used a TP from a Chim. I have had no problems and it only cost £20.00 from my local TVR dealer.

You can run the car with the throttle pot disconnected. Throttle response will not be as good as usual as the air flow meters respond slower than the throttle pot but it should be drivable (mine was). Give it a go and see if the symptoms disappear. If they do then it could be the TP thats at fault. I found another fault on mine which was easier to rectufy (after changing TP and symptoms returned). There is a fairly large multi plug sitting just under the ignition coil on mine, the TP wiring runs through this. I found this not to be fully pushed together, gave it a squirt with WD40 and pushed back together. This cured my problems, maybe worth a look if disconnecting TP cures your symptoms as it could be this and not the pot itself.
Good luck,
Carl.

Hi Dodze,

My TP went recently, (new from ford in January this year, and the new gold connector version! (£55 with loom)) with exactly the same symptoms, especially the jerky clutch / gear changes!

I unplugged it and the car immediately went back to normal, although in 'Safe Mode' I believe! Best way to confirm it's failed.

On that note, I took it back to Ford this morning with the recipet and they gave me a new one, lets hope it lasts longer than 6 months this time!

See this thread for details of my new TP:
www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=203469

p.s. As changing mine did not cure the fault and I then found the dodgy connection. I have a spare TP that I am fairly confident is good. If you wanted to give it a try before buying a new one I could post it to ya and you could just post it back if it proves to be that and when you get a new one. they only take 5 mins to change. Just a thought gimme a shout if you wanna try it.

Carl.

Just on a note on TP...... there are a few threads on here which tell you that one of the cerbie 4.2 TP will do the job.....

IMHO this is complete bollox.... I test drove one for all of 30 miles... yep car seems to run smoothly but at low n high revs is missing the Fizz of the original Ford spec TP..(not worth saving the £25 for IMHO... spend the dosh and do do the wiring loom conversion if required)

That is the original type without gold connectors, so in theory if you remove your gold connector adapter loom the wiring should be correct.. Not having seen one I am assuming the adapter loom just plugs in ofcourse.. Gimme 10 mins and i will lift the cover and check wiring on mine for ya.

OK changed the TP to the one I am borrowing from Carl... reversed the wiring loom as it was an old non gold connector TP..... turned the key and bingo...

You always seem to know when you have changed a dud sensor for a good one as the car takes a couple of minutes to relearn its idle speed as the ECU is taking in new info...

Car ran really well .. in fact probably better than it has ever run.. and I didn't get pops and bangs from overrun when changing down (it is cooler tonight but I had them at silverstone and that wasn't exactly roasting) so it may be that the TP I had has always been a bit iffy and had the car running in an over rich "safe mode".

Just need to get a new TP ordered up.(will give tune parts a call as per Ceejay73's thread..).. and Ceejay's TP posted back to him..
