I've had a bit of crunching when changing down from 3rd to 2nd at high revs and was thinking that it might be a gearbox problem. Yesterday the clutch pedal was sticking/snagging from fully depressed, on release - anyone suffered a similar problem? I have noticed that occasionally the gearbox clunks a little when selecting reverse when stationery. Could I be lucky and it just need bleeding to solve the symptoms?

Sounds very much like my recent thread, only my problems were reverse, first and second.

Mine turned out to be the clutch slave cylinder. It had been leaking, not that much but enough to crunch the gears. Put a new one on this morning, so far, it's a vast improvement, still a little tough to get into first but a tweak of the rod should cure it.

Sounds to me a very similar problem to yours.

Just read your thread again Steve, same symptoms exactly apart from the pedal, but funnily enough I had the pedal problem in a porsche 944. That too was a slave cylinder.

I'm getting used to doing them now.

Thanks Mike, after reading through the 'bible' I'm hoping that it is a slave or master cylinder recon.

I had the same problem going into 4th. Check the clutch fluid level and try bleeding the clutch system first (or preferably change the fluid) and check the master and slave for leaks. If you change all the clutch fluid and it gets better and then gradually gets worse I'd suspect the master or/and slave or possibly the pipework between them (you may see leaks). However, if you don't have any leaks in either and changing the fluid doesn't make any difference then you may have a problem with synchromesh on that gear which is the problem I had. I took the box out and had it partially reconditioned and put a new clutch in at the same time. It made the clutch a lot lighter in the process.

ETD: just seen you have a v8, sorry mine was a v6 with the ford box.

Good luck,

Mark

Hi,

Took my S2 to green star TVR in Blackpool who sorted it all out, now it shifts like it should. The clutch was worn and the gearbox seal was letting out oil, all in all it was a top service and I am now enjoying it a lot better!

Probably didnt help but credit where its due!

wils2, what did you have done at Green Star, I'm about to book my S3 in for a service there. Previous 2 owners were both into self servicing, so think I'll let a mechanic have a go at her before I start to get my hands dirty again.

I had a look at a Chim that they had for sale there before buying the S, but would have used all my budget, so no money for any work etc, so went for an S instead.
